※ 引述《HisVol (他的體積)》之銘言： : 應該說是印歐語系 : 動詞都會跟著主詞的單複數而改變 : 但這根本沒什麼意義 : 時態還能表達一些額外資訊 : 單複數根本看主詞本身就懂 : 動詞變化完全沒提供額外資訊 : 為什麼那麼雞肋的設定還沒被淘汰？ 有些情況下，動詞單、複數是在呼應不同句法位置上的中心詞，或是語意上的不同解讀。 例如像 (1a) 的動詞用單數 was fired，表示關係代名詞 who 所指涉到的名詞是單數， 因此關係子句主要修飾的是句法位置較高的名詞組 secretary，被解僱的主體是「秘書」 。 要是 (1b) 中的動詞用複數 were fired，who 所指涉到的是複數名詞，這時候關係子句 的句法位置較低，所修飾的是介係詞組裡的名詞組 professors，被解僱的主體是「教授 」。 (1) a. [The secretary of the professors who was fired] filed a lawsuit. b. [The secretary of the professors who were fired] filed a lawsuit. 類似的情況還有例 (2)。(2a) 中關係子句的動詞為單數 is qualified，修飾的核心詞是 one，這時候主語內部元素所表達的是：在所有候選人當中，只有一個人是合格的，而這 個人即將接受面試。 (2b) 中關係子句動詞為複數 are qualified，所修飾的是介係詞組裡的名詞 candidates ，而這時候主語內部元素所表達的是：存在一個「由多位合格候選人所構成的集合」，主 語 one 表示從該合格的子集合中，抽取一個人來面試。 (2) a. [One of the candidates who is qualified] will be interviewed. b. [One of the candidates who are qualified] will be interviewed. 主語若包含集合名詞或計量名詞的話，動詞單複數會影響句法中心語與語意對應。像 (3a ) 的動詞為單數 was，這表示 group 才是句法的實體中心語，意思就是把所有學生視為 一個「群體」看待。 但如果像 (3b) 動詞為複數 were，就表示 students 才是句法和語意上的中心語，這時 候「學生們」應該要被視為各自獨立行動的複數個體。 (3) a. [A group of students] was protesting in the square. b. [A group of students] were protesting in the square. 動詞單複數也會影響伴隨結構的呈現。像 (4a) 的動詞為單數 has，表示句法上的中心語 是單數的 the committee，它是主角，with all its members 是伴隨的配角。接下來的 連鎖反應就是一併約束所有格代名詞 its report，禁止複數 *their。 但如果像 (4b) 那樣，動詞為複數 have，這時候的 the committee + with all its members 比較像是＆並列結構，因此連帶影響 their report，禁止使用單數 *its。 (4) a. [The committee with all its members] has published its/*their report. b. [The committee with all its members] have published their/*its report. 最後就是在並列結構裡，動詞單複數會造成單一指涉或多人指涉的差異。像 (5a) 的動詞 為單數 was，表示導演與製片為同一人，由於只有一個指涉實體，呼應單數動詞 was。 然而像 (5b) 這樣，動詞為複數 were，表示導演與製片兩位不同人，因為有兩個指涉實 體，在句法上就會是並列結構，因而呼應動詞為複數 were。 (5) a. [The director and producer of the film] was interviewed on television. b. [The director and producer of the film] were interviewed on television. 大概就這樣，隨便寫寫。 --
