Specially, the plays of 16th and 17th century England in which the protagonist attempts to avenge himself or herself on a villain. See also Jacobean revenge tragedy. Jacobean revenge tragedy A type of drama popular during the reign of James Ⅰ of England(1603-1625)and said to reflect the permissiveness of the times, which placed an emphasis on the theatrical and the sensational rather than on the concept of humanity's tragic destiny. The main characters were sentimentalized amd the plot was often wrenched to point a moral. In presenting the destructive power of evil, the plays focused on the baser aspects of human nature. There was frequent use of the play-within-the-play, or a paralleling of actions in two different places. The idea was to kill nearly everyone by the play's end by as a great variety of means as possible with one good character left to speak the moral. An outstanding example is a play still often staged, Thomas Middleton's Women Beware Women. A the Duke's banquet, Isbella is struck by a poisoned shower of gold, Guardino falls through a trapdoor, Livia is poisoned by incense, Fabritio is shot with an arrow, Hippolito falls on a sword, the Duck is poisoned accidentally, and Brancha commits suicide with a poisoned drink.
