I took a course called intermediate drawing this semester. Every student was
assigned an artist and has to do a little research about him or her and give
a short presentation to the class. I took charged of Christo. In the
following paragraph, I will explain my impression about Christo’s works. It’
s a draft. Feel free to give me any comments.
-----
Christo and Jeanne-Chaude were born on the same day, 13 June in 1935, in
Gabarovo Bulgaria and famous for their environmental installation art.
What impressed me the most is that Jeanne-Claude once stated that each
work by Christo and Jeanne-Claude is like a “scream of freedom.” The
artists self-funded all their projects so that they can retain their artistic
autonomy. Besides the artistic expression, the only thing they need to worry
about is to negotiate with the government in order to get the permission to
install their works in public space. Take the “Running Fence” project as an
example, they even had to pay a $60,000 fine for lack of permission to the
coastal region. I totally agree with Jeanne-Claude’s statement. Comparing to
my works, which sometime were interpreted as explosion, their works can be
explained as implosion. There are always complicated details that made
intentionally by the artists on the cover of the wrapping, such as wrinkles,
shadow and the location of the rope. These details were deformed by the
natural force, such as wind force and sun light, all the time. The movement
suggests that something is going to inside. Moreover, the single color of the
wrapping material symbolizes a world which has suffered from a series of
serious explosions. In other words, every detail that was created by human
beings and reflects cherish able human culture has gone. Therefore, although
people’s eye sight was blocked, we all know that a wild event was happening
energetically inside the wrapping. That is why art critic David Bourdon has
described Christo’s wrapping as a “revelation though concealment” and why
I consider his works as a distinct interpretation of the aphorism “less is
more.” In other words, the less we see, the more we imagine.
Christo insists that their works contain no deeper meaning or political
metaphors. It’s the visual impression of an unfamiliar or surreal scene that
makes people to shout, “What is that?” Although, the works didn’t provide
much information for people to analyze, since everything was wrapped, it won’
t take long for people figure out the answer. Once people pass the “valley
curtain,” and “the gates,” or they know what is originally inside the
wrapping, such as Reichstag, people will get their consciousness back from
shock and start to enjoy the unprecedented landscape, just like enjoy a newly
decorated interior space or a remodeled facade. However, it is the scale that
makes Chrito’s work become art. In brief, it’s all about freedom, about
what human can do.
