Whilst Mauresmo was never really troubled, the win was not as easy as the scoreline suggests. First round matches at Grand Slams are notorious booby-traps for the favorites, who are often just glad to get them out the way, whatever the performance. Andre Agassi was just one big name to find to his detriment today that early tournament rustiness can prove fatal. Fear of the first round banana skin might go some of the way to explaining Amelie Mauresmo’s nervous disposition as she took to Suzanne Lenglen court. The world No3 had trouble getting into gear against a Slovak opponent who is no mug on clay, a surface where she looks a player way above her 75 WTA ranking. Prior to Roland Garros, 24-year-old Ludmila Cervanova had won no less than nine of her ten clay-court matches so far this season, and reached the final in Casablanca, where she fell to France’s Emilie Loit. Then, in the second she attacked the net more often, and without volleying brilliantly, put the Slovak under enough pressure for her to concede another service game at 3-3. That was all Mauresmo needed, and a few minutes later the match was over.
