Unable to find secure footing or impose himself with his normally deep groundstoke game, the 34-year-old Agassi was outrun and outgunned by the 23-year-old Haehnel, who was making his Grand Slam debut. With No. 271-ranked Haehnel serving big in spots and sending his groundstrokes whizzing into the corners, the sixth-seeded Agassi pressed the entire contest and was only able to break the qualifier once. The American veteran rarely was able to take the gloves off with his return of serve, was often seen floundering at the net and didn't take advantage of any of the opportunities presented to him. "I never got comfortable out there and wasn't controlling the match the way I wanted to," said Agassi, who was sent to his earliest exit since 1998 when Marat Safin took him down. "I wasn't controlling the ball the way I wanted and wasn't putting it where I wanted. As a reaction, I found myself on the wrong parts of the court. All he needed to do was hit one decent shot. I wasn't moving to the ball. I wasn't comfortable." Agassi not only won the title here in 1999, but reached the finals in 1990 and 1991. The past two years, he has competed well before falling to top clay courters Juan Carlos Ferrero and Guillermo Coria in the quarterfinals. But this year, he only played one clay court match coming into Roland Garros, a straight set loss to qualifier Nenad Zimonjic last week in St. Poelten. It was clear that he needed a few more laps around the track before arriving in Paris. "I probably got what I deserved," Agassi said. "You always want enough matches. But I'm not at that stage in my career where I have a lot of options. I have to choose carefully and hope a few things fall my way to find everything I need to have a chance of winning. It was certainly not to be with this preparation. That's probably the most obvious thing when you don't like the way that you are feeling out there." Agassi added that he's focusing on the big picture this year and didn't feel like he had enough of a realistic chance to win Roland Garros to spend a lot of time preparing for it. A father of two, he believes he has a more realistic shots at winning Wimbledon or the US Open and is vowing to get enough matches in to prepare for them. He isn't sure whether he'll return to play Roland Garros next year as a 35-year-old. "It's hard to say," said Agassi, who's eyes welled up when considering the question. "You want to come back, but you just don't know. It's a year away and that's a long time for me now. The chances get less every year, that's for sure." --
