Six regulars were missing from Jose Couceiro's line-up for the match, but it soon became clear the Portuguese boast plenty of depth on the bench as events got off to an entertaining start. Both sides enjoyed forays forward in the opening minutes and the deadlock was broken after 20 minutes when Feliciano Condesso headed in a cross from the excellent Pedro Correia. The Baby Scorpions reacted immediately, but their efforts lacked organisation and it took a penalty from Ousman Jallow to level the scores a minute before the break. Having battled their way back to level terms, it looked as if Gambia were staring at disaster when captain Ken Jammeh received his marching orders early in the second half. Instead, they seemed to play better with ten men and Abdoulie Mansally put them ahead with a free-kick in the 68th minute. Unable to make their numerical advantage count, Portugal's woes were doubled when captain Bruno Gama was forced off with an injury. With the win, the Gambians take second place in the section and will go on to face the second-placed side from Group A in the Round of 16.
