Benfica needed a win to progress to the second round of the UEFA Champions League and knock United out in the process. Nelson's thunderous drive gave Benfica hope of a positive result, only for Vidic to head in an equaliser at the end of the first half. Ryan Giggs and Louis Saha scored in the second period to secure a 3-1 win for United and demote Benfica to the Uefa Cup. Santos accepts the Premiership leaders overpowered his side after half-time, but the Benfica coach was left to rue Vidic's equaliser. "The goal they scored at the end of the first half caused us a lot of problems," said Santos. "We started well and although we had difficulty in possession from defence to attack we were controlling the game. "Then United had four or five minutes of possession [at the end of the first half] and the goal changed the game. "In the second half United were too strong for us." --
