Benfica got back on track after the Celtic blow with a 3-1 Da Luz win that, albeit not all plain sailing, brings the Encarnados into safe harbour. The adversary was hardly a tough nut as Estrela have only managed a sole draw so far this season and seemed already doomed to fight relegation. They are, nonetheless, a first division club and Dario (13 min) put the hosts up with a neat header. Benfica were left reeling after the goal, but, as they found out in Glasgow, if you dawdle you pay the consequences. Miccoli (30 min) showed his customary sharp eye as he put away a Katsouranis assist to even things up. Rival goalie Paulo Lopes – and the Encarnados' slightly awry shooting – kept the scores even until the second half. After play resumed Pedro Simoes fouled Nelson and Captain Simao (53 min) put away the second goal from a spot kick to take the lead with Simoes sent off and Estrela down to ten men. The last fifteen minutes degenerated into foul play and many yellow cards were shown, resulting in the expulsion of Miccoli – who thereby is out of the upcoming 'classico' at the Dragao next week – and Rui Duarte leaving it 10 against nine men.
