The first half seemed to presage yet another disappointment but the Aguias swept back in the second – with Rui Costa in action – and made some peace with their fans as Paulo Jorge, Nuno Gomes, Simao and Karagounis banged in the home goals. Fernando Santos made some changes to the first eleven: Nelson, Ricardo Rocha and Miguelito revolutionising the much-criticised back four, while Nuno Gomes and Miccoli were given the onus of attack. Benfica were much more balanced and the team showed more self-discipline. Aves kept cautiously back, relying on Xano and Nene for counter-attacking strikes forward. The visitors showed some bite with this formation and Benfica reacted first through Miccoli then via Simao. Minutes later wing-back Miguelito whipped a cross shot into the Aves box, keeper Rui Faria only got to block the ball and the leftover was nodded in by midfielder Paulo Jorge (19 min) to the relief of a rather nervous audience demanding to see some redemption. Benfica relaxed a little – out of stress relief more than strategy – and lady luck spat in their drink as Filipe Anunciacao (27 min) took a soft speculative shot that the usually firm Quim overconfidently tried to catch without adopting the proper posture. The experienced goalie was left wincing as the ball slipped from his grasp and rolled between his legs and into the net. Fernando Santos turned to the recovered Rui Costa in place of Katsouranis in the second half and the Encarnados visibly bucked up under the veteran's guidance. Simao also showed that, bit by bit, he's coming back to form. Nuno Gomes (50 min) snatched back the lost lead as the centre-forward nodded in a Simao cross. Aves surged forward to see if Benfica would repeat some of their unforced errors, but Quim was more solid than ever. William handled the ball in the visitors' area and Simao (62 min) banged the ball in. Fernando Santos freshened up his team by bringing on Nuno Assis and Kikin Fonseca. With a goal and a win under his belt, Nuno feels that this could be a turning point for Benfica. "It's obvious that we weren't expecting that goal to go in", he began when questioned about the Quim error that led to the Aves equaliser in the first half. "These things happen in football, but the important thing was how we reacted. Despite the midweek game [against Manchester United] we mustered a lot of effort and came back to score three goals in the second half." "It was our way of showing the fans that we understand their disappointment [shown by the fluttering white hankies at the end of the CL match] but that we'll always give our all for this club and we were as annoyed as they were. We didn't play so badly against Manchester, but that's the past and in the present we're getting better.
