Although Connery is not believed to be licensed by Fifa, football’s world governing body, the sweet-talking former 007 actor played a key role in persuading Hemdani to join the Bank of Scotland Premierleague champions. Connery and David Murray, the Rangers chairman, have been friends for many years and it was the man with the golden touch to whom Murray turned when he discovered that Hemdani was considering a move to Germany. Connery met the French Algerian — perhaps over a dry Martini or two — in the South of France, near where Murray owns a villa, and the deal was done. Hemdani has signed a four-year contract that will earn him about ?20,000 a week. “I enlisted Sean’s help to sell Scotland to Brahim,” Murray said. “Bayer Leverkusen were chasing him and I arranged for Sean to meet him at Cannes airport.” Rangers may have landed a bargain. Hemdani, not so much a special agent as a free agent, did not cost a fee. Tottenham Hotspur are believed to have taken a more traditional route in signing Aaron Lennon, 18, the midfield player, from Leeds United for about ?1 million. --
