Empics Vaughan: Just one of Everton's striking woes Vaughan travelled to Colorado earlier this month to visit the renowned American specialist Dr Richard Steadman who has previously operated on the 20-year-old to remedy serious problems with his left knee. However, Steadman was forced to cancel the surgery after breaking his arm in a skiing accident. As a consequence Everton and Vaughan were forced to seek help in England, with the young striker going under the knife yesterday to repair lateral cartilage damage. ''James had his operation yesterday [Wednesday] and everything went very well,'' confirmed Steve Round, Everton's assistant manager. ''We now wish him a speedy recovery, and hopefully he should be fit before the end of the season. But we will have to keep a tab on that and see how it goes over the next few weeks.'' Everton will hope Vaughan's rehabilitation is both successful and speedy as the club is gripped by a striker crisis, with Vaugahn one of four frontmen laid low with injury, although Victor Anichebe and Louis Saha are both closing in on a return. Yakubu, the Goodison Park club's main striker, is out for the season after rupturing his Achilles tendon during last month's 1-0 away win over Tottenham Hotspur. Anichebe missed the 1-0 win at Manchester City with a back injury last weekend, whilst Saha has sat out the last three weeks with hamstring trouble. Both players are due to undergo fitness tests over the weekend with regard to the possibility of figuring in Monday's game with Chelsea at Goodison Park. Everton have subsequently been linked with transfer window moves in January for former Toffeeman James Beattie, Portsmouth's David Nugent and Michael Owen of Newcastle. --
