I have to admit that I have attempted several times in the past to do what Gerald Liu was trying to do: memorizing all the words in an English dictionary. But the harder I tried to focus on that dictionary, the more sleepy I got. I blamed myself for not trying hard enough at the beginning, but then I simply gave up; it didn't work for me. However, I personally know a few friends who have achieved a similar feat. One of them was a colleague of mine. He aced his Toefl by an almost-perfect score and is now on a full scholarship in Carnegie Mellon University pursuing his phd in Computer Science. I am not saying that his achievement was chiefly caused by the fact that he had memorized that darn Toefl vocabulary list….(or am I?) He admitted that he memorized it solely for the exam purpose, and he understood that in order to retain those words, he would have to read extensively. It is hard to imagine how much pain he had to endure to achieve this. But hey, that worked for him and there may be something to this method. I am just saying that maybe we should acknowledge that there are even people in this world who enjoy playing scrabble/sudoku everyday.
