Hm...I don't disagree, but I don't agree either. You have a point, that I give you. I somewhat agree but I can't say I fullheartedly agree with your views. I certainly don't believe in humanity, and I don't believe there's any universal goodness, but I think there are a few reasons some people won't be able to "change for the better". If no one in the world believes that these "criminals" can change, what do you think will happen? There's not even any incentive for these people to change, no one believes in them. For example, when a person made mistakes, does that mean that he/she will always make mistakes? People have this thing of making assumptions, and even if some person only made a mistake once, he/she is most likely already labeled as "bad" if the mistake is severe enough. No one will believe in the people who have the potential to change, and personally, I don't think it's possible to live normally with no one believing in you. Some of these people will start to think, "If you think that I'm the culprit, FINE, I'll BE the culprit." And they'll start meeting people's expectations again, convinced that it makes no difference since whether the culprit is or is not them, the blame will land on them anyway. They seldom get any second chances. It is hard to give someone a second chance. We're all afraid of getting hurt, it's stupid to believe in others, after all. Humans are ugly and we might even get used for believing in these people. We don't understand each other, we can't read minds. It is natural for us to not believe and to suspect an ulterior motive. Are we 'wrong' for being skeptical? Not quite either. But... Moreover, sometimes this has to do with the environment we grew up with. Maybe it's their parents, maybe it's the people around them. They never even had a chance to really decide whether they want to be good little citizens or criminals. They never had the chance, too bad, they should go to hell? Hm... Also, the law ain't invincible. There are probably more innocent sentenced wrongly than we think. Lack of money to hire a good lawyer, being framed, not enough evidence to prove innocence etc... If the death sentence is established and these people died under the death sentence, what are you going to tell the family of these innocent people, if investigations later on prove their innocence? If we execute all these felons, we will execute possible innocents and the people with the potential to change as well. How are we going to determine who to and who not to execute? The world isn't black and white. People's 'morals' aren't painted in black and white. Justice is just a pretty word filled with ideals and empty of truth. Furthurmore, if killing is supposedly wrong, then the death sentence will make us all hypocrites. (Though I personally think that death is actually better than life in prison, but that's just me). Despite everything I've typed, I do somewhat support execution. I think that feeding all these prisoners is a waste of resources and a waste of tax money. But, not all criminals are bastards, some still have a family, and maybe their family and friends still care for them, who knows. I'm not really hot about Prison Break (though the main character sure is hot), but you should go watch it~ --
