※ 引述《ezhik (ezhik)》之銘言： : It happened to me so many times when I made new friends abroad, : they asked me why I have and use English name to introduce myslef. : Before I got those questions from people,I never thought about the true reasons. : The reasons might be following, : First, easy to remember : Second, feel like easy to intergrate urself with others : Thirs, others : But the thing is Japanese or Korean people I know who live in US, : They still use their real Japanese/Korean names. there could be several different theories. firstly, perhaps chinese names are harder to pronounce correctly for non-native speakers than korean or japanese names, for the four tones. it could be a reason, but it's not sufficient. some chinese people in the states use their initials of given name rather than an english name, and it actually works. btw, initials are also easy to remember, too. i've met a scholar in a conference, whose name is Ching-Kwan, and everyone called her C.K.. it's easy to pronounce and easy to remember, as well as any english name. secondly, if we consider the social/ cultural contexts rather than the individual ends, here would be some other explainations. wether you like this phenomenon or not, in taiwan english is a language with symbolic meanings, or sort of representation of social status. english names are moderner or fancier for some people. not you, not me, but some people. but this theory has its own weakness, too. it's very unlikely to say that english has no symbolic meaning in japan, but apparetly japanese people are not that into using english names. --- several years ago, we invited an american scholar to give a speech in our institude. after his talk, students went foward to him asking for his autograph on his book. he directly denied to write down the english names of some students when they asked him to do so. i guess he was feeling weird to write down an english name in that occasion, but maybe not only weird. -- 他不是沒心肝， :............................................................ : 只不過他的心肝是別人。 --
