Recently, I started to question that why many Taiwan students know how to get
grade in English, but afraid of speaking in general. I think that: 1. Taiwan
is not a Native English speaking country. 2. Taiwan education system only
force students to “study” not learn English. 3. Many Taiwan students think
that what they know is good enough. Anyhow, this PO is not to create any
fights or disrespect to any categories of people. For a person who has been
in US for 8 years and still try to learn many things, from culture, language,
and even my career. Here are some of my suggestions on what you could do to
improve English skills. 1. Find some random Foreigner and just start
talking. From greeting to even point out good places that you recommend
those international students to go, you can learn a great deal just by simply
chatting. There is no need to watch out your grammar since those rules will
only slow you down. You should just start chatting without any thoughts and
even grab his/her msn (although most of Americans use aim) and you can start
to chat online. 2. Find something that you are interested in talking about:
Most of my college friends used to have a very tough time to understand what
I was saying since my accent. It is funny that they did not confess to me
after recent years. Anyhow, be brave and just speak up… think about
something that you like to chat about. Then find a native English speaker….
Don’t be afraid that he might not understand you (although most of them are
really having a tough time at beginning), but practice makes perfect. The
more you speak, the more that you are willing to open up yourself and chat
about something you like. From TV, movies, even about picking up girls,
those topics can make the conversation lighter and even learn something from
each other. 3. Even go on a date with a international student. Many TW
students shouldn’t see date as absolute “going out.” It could be just
going to a movie or walking around. The more time you get to spend, the more
chance for you to practice. You will also learn a great deal about other
culture during the conversation. Here are just a few of thoughts that I have
… feel free to post you comment. I think that I am still very amature, but
I do like to help more and more people to overcome their fear of speaking
