Despite what's morally or politically correct, accent does matter. The superiorities, even if it doesn't hold in your mind, matter to most people around you, conciously or unconciously. So of course it's important to immitate that native-like accent as close as possible, especially if the language you're acquiring is that of a "superior" culture. That is, an American learning Chinese suffers less than a Taiwanese acquiring English when they have heavy foreign accent. Of course, such things only matter when you're living in their culture. We are in Taiwan so English accent is not as important. Yet Taiwanese people speaking Mandarine with some Taiwnese accent can discredit you, too. People think you're less educated. Same thing applies to speaking Taiwanese with some Mandarine accent, too. People may think you're the new Chinese immigrant (I meant 外省人) and seeing you "through colored glasses". The rule doesn't just apply to language. What you wear, how you behave, what you eat... These kinds of cultural biase exists everywhere. It's about how people judge other people. --
