“The Rape of Nanking” is the best novel that I have read. The theme is: “the forgotten holocaust of World WarΠ.” .On Novermber,13, 1937, a great and terrible catastrophe occurred.Up to 300,000 people were killed by the Japanese army during a period of six weeks, in Nanking. The victims included Chinese soldiers who had surrendered, innocent common people, and even women and infants. About 80,000 women were raped from eight to eighty years of age.The Japanese army gravely violated international conventions, and even killed people merely for amusement. The soldiers regarded rape as a form of recreation. They devised very cruel tortures to inflict on innocent people. For example, many Chinese soldiers who had surrendered were rounded up and herded to the outskirts of the city,where they were mowed down by machine guns, used for bayonet practice, or soaked with gasoline and burned alive. Fathers were forced to rape their own daughters and; sons, their mothers, as other family members watched. The Japanese army also displayed great brutality, such as live burials, castration, the carving of organs, and the roasting alive of people. These are just a few small examples of the atrocities that occurred. We find it hard to believe that such horrendous , unforgivable crimes were committed in the twentieth century. Only the incarnation of the Devil could commit such crimes.The author, Iris Chang, helped to uncover this holocaust, so right-wing Japanese threatened to kill her, and she subsequently suffered from major-depression. Finally, she committed suicide. The path to justice is not only arduous but also dangerous. The Chinese army tried to protect their country from invasion, and prevent violations by the Japanese army, even though their weapons and training were inferior to those of Japan,and knowing thatthey would be tortured brutally if they were captured by the Japanese army. But the Chinese army never gave up their mission Love of country made people brave, and bravery removed fear. The angels would praise their moral courage , and they would enjoy bliss in paradise as their reward. Their moral integrity would help to enlighten the world. I feel so sorry and angry that the Japanese government put hateful war felons into their shrine, and that they regarded them as great heroes.Many Japanese never acknowledged the war crimes that they committed The prime minister of Japan makes a formal visit to their “shrine” every year. This action should be condemned for humiliating the victims of war. International justice should be not built as a castle in the sky. The Japanese government must apology for Japanese violations of justice during World War Π, and they must acknowledge the crimes they committed. As well, the Japanese government must compensate victims and their offspring , and return the gold and antiques that they looted. Germany has compensated the Jews who were violated by the Nazis, with a great deal of money donated to Israel every year. On the contrary, the Japanese governvent remains as stubborn as a mule. The Japanese government has set a bad example for the world.It wants to join the permanent member states of the United Nations Security Council, but they must first make expiation of their guilt, or their offspring will shouder the burden and shame of these crimes, for many more generations. --
