Of course, I would not agree to have a brothel established right across from an elementary school. This is due to two considerations. First, elementary school students might not have sufficient knowledge regarding human sexuality and its implications. Second, they are easily influenced by external factors, and the society of which they are a part does not exactly portray the sex trade in a positive light. As for a neighbour who is a prostitute and openly solicits for clients in my front door, I would politely ask the act of solicitation be relocated elsewhere. Not because my neighbour sells sex, it is because I don't like anyone selling anything in my front door. I'd do the same for a salesperson who attempts to sell any product. Morality is neither absolute nor universal. It is relative and individually- or group-oriented. What one individual considers to be moral may not be so for others, and vice versa. Thus, the "moral element," mentioned in the paragraph quoted above, is not applicable in this case. Moreover, just because more people feel that something is wrong does not necessarily mean it is. Not too long ago many people openly rejected the concept of Earth not being the centre of the cosmos, but, as it turned out, they were not correct. : This debate could go on forever. But all I want to do here, is list the few : major things that I think are wrong with prostitution. : 1. Firstly, to rebut the "old profession" argument. Just because something : has happened for a long time doesn't mean that it's right. Slavery existed : for a long time, is that the right thing? : 2. I see prostitution as a form of oppression on women. Perhaps that's an : extreme view, but really, how many women voluntarily chose such a career, : and more importantly, how many of them would be proud of what they're doing? : 3. Your arguments are duly noted. I, too, will jot down a few ideas pertaining to this issue. 1. Because something has existed for a long time, it doesn't mean that it's right. But, does it mean there is anything wrong with it? 2. I sympathise with sex workers who are forced into the profession, and I agree prostitution under this circumstance should be prohibited and the criminals who are manipulating these workers should be punished. That being said, if sex workers enter the industry by choice, then it is their prerogative, as long as no one is harmed. And why can't sex workers who willingly provide sexual services and enjoy doing it be proud of what they do? Sure, the society might not approve, but should they live for themselves or for the society? 3. Before discussing the concept of being sacred, one must properly establish its precise definition. What do you mean by "sacred"? Does it mean to conform to the teachings of certain religions? If this were the case, how would the different meanings of sacredness be reconciled among the various religions? I accept that you think sex because of love is the way to go. I also think that having sex with someone whom I have affection for may offer a more enjoyable experience than raw sex alone, but this in itself does not imply sex sans love is wrong or should be forbidden.
