A female reporter asked me some thing about the Typhoon Morakot at 9:38pm, and told me that she will call me back in about half an hour or later. Since I had received many messages from the netizens and the reporter still haven’t called me again, I summarized the related information as following: (1) We need specialist facilities and rescue teams for immediate help, what the government provides now are not enough to do the rescue. Most of people think the speed of rescuing is too slow, and also think that it’s time for us to call for international aids. In addition, more than 10,000 victims are still waiting for help. Without the specialist facilities and rescue teams, we residents can do nothing but waiting! (2) The action that government doing now is lack of elasticity. Even though President Ma said that many existing laws and rules can be used by the local government to call for related helps, however, these laws and rules are indeed inefficient. For example, the Pingtung county government asked the central government to direct armies into the disaster areas, but they waited more than one day before the army came. Compared to 921 earthquake happened ten years ago in Taiwan, the army came to disaster areas just in 2 hours. Obviously, the Emergency Management Information System of central government seems no use. (3) The anticipated problems are also important for us to notice. We all afraid that plague may break out. The weather in Taiwan is hot and humid, especially when summer. After the floods and mudslides, we afraid that plague will cause the second tragedy. How to prevent the plague from happening and the future water management all need related experts to help us. (4) Volunteers and charities are one of the main powers of this rescue. Many people donate goods and money this time, and show their ceaseless concern about the news. Since it’s hard for victims to report the case, most of them call for help via cell phone, BBS, Youtube and Plurk. The PTT BBS station (telnet://ptt.cc) helps collect immediate messages, and hold collecting material activities by volunteer from the netizens as soon as they can. Lots of news broadcasted is also cited from “Emergency Board” of the PTT BBS station. We never lose our hope while we believe that people’s power can make our homeland better, and also believe that the international society won’t forget us.
