Father of Dodgers SS Furcal dies

NEW YORK --
Rafael Furcal's father died in the early hours of Sunday at a
medical center in the Dominican Republic where he remained hospitalized for
three weeks after being kicked in the chest by a horse.
The Los Angeles Dodgers had placed shortstop Furcal on the bereavement/family
emergency list before Thursday's series finale with the Cincinnati Reds.
Furcal returned to his home in the Dominican Republic to be with his father
Silvino.
To take his roster spot, the club recalled infielder Chin-lung Hu from
Triple-A Albuquerque. Hu is with the big-league club for the first time this
season.
A relative told ESPNdeportes.com that Furcal died around 2 a.m. ET. Funeral
services will be held Sunday and Monday in Loma de Cabrera, on the northern
border of the Dominican Republic and Haiti, where most of the Furcal family
lives.
Furcal suffered serious internal damage after being kicked by a horse that
was being saddled in the family farm.
