minorleagueball: Arizona: Like all teams with multiple picks, the Diamondbacks needed to find the right balance between talent and affordability. In the first round, they went with Florida HS third baseman Bobby Borchering, a switch-hitter with power who should stick at third base. Their second pick, A.J. Pollock out of Notre Dame, is more of a steady guy with average tools but a good performance record. Supplemental choices Matt Davidson (3B, California) and Chris Owings (SS, South Carolina) are high school hitters who are somewhat raw but have upside. Their last supplemental pick, Mike Belfiore out of Boston College, is a lefty with a 90+ fastball who could reach the majors quickly if he can polish his breaking stuff as soon as the Dbacks hope. Second round picks Eric Smith (Rhode Island RHP) and Mark Krauss (Ohio, OF) are successful college players with good track records. Krauss looks like an astute choice in particular, having led the Cape Cod League in OBP last year and having at least decent power. The next two picks were toolsy, Keon Broxton (Santa Fe CC 3B) in the third round and David Nick (California HS SS) in the fourth. Both will need development patience. Fifth round Loyola Marymount 1B Ryan Wheeler, on the other hand, has the bat to move through the system rapidly. The main emphasis in subsequent rounds was on successful college choices. Overall, I think Arizona used their extra picks very well, drawing talent from a variety of sources, mixing raw players with more skilled counterparts. baseballanalysts: This organization had the most picks of any team in the first three rounds: Eight. Unfortunately, the only two picks that really got me excited were prep third basemen Bobby Borchering (16th overall) and Matt Davidson (35th overall). They both have massive power for players their ages, but they are also probably both first basemen down the line. The club really focused on hitting during the first day of the draft, taking just one pitcher and one two-way player, to go along with six hitters. pgcrosschecker: The D-Backs loaded up on impact bats, particularly to address their needs on the corners, highlighted by arguably the two best prep power bats available: Bobby Borchering and Matt Davidson. Marc Krauss and Ryan Wheeler add to the corner bat focus, with both having some experience at third base, but both whose tools are more likely to settle in at first base or in left field. A.J. Pollock offers more versatility and it will be interesting to see where and how Arizona has him progress. Chris Owings gives the club a potentially solid offensive threat at a premium position (shortstop). Mike Belfiore was the one power arm of note the team took with their early picks, and it remains to be seen whether he can be groomed as a starter, although he does have the added value of being a potential two-way threat. Late round value/sleeper: 13th rounder Patrick Schuster created headlines this spring by tossing four consecutive no-no’s. However, 12th rounder Charles Brewer from UCLA is the pitcher who has my eye. He didn’t live up to lofty expectations at college, and he doesn’t have great stuff, but he has a good enough overall repertoire that I could see him turning his fortunes around as a professional. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 各家選秀新秀排名: BA minorleagueball pgcrosschecker draftreport Bobby Borchering 16 15 17 7 A.J. Bobby Borchering, 3b, Bishop Verot HS, Fort Myers, Fla. Borchering is that rare breed, a switch-hitter who can drive the ball out of the park from both sides of the plate. He isn’t Chipper Jones; he’ll have to work hard to remain at third base in the long haul and doesn’t project as a future batting champion, but his raw power eclipses Jones’ at the same age. 6. Matt Davidson, 3b, Yucaipa (Calif.) HS Davidson has matured significantly as a hitter over the last 12 months and learned how to use his leverage and raw strength more judiciously. His offensive package and swing resemble a young Troy Glaus. 9. A.J. Pollock, of, Notre Dame Pollock has shown flashes of all the necessary offensive ingredients: power, patience, hit-ability and speed, all the while being able to play center field and maybe even second base at the big-league level. If everything comes together at the same time, Pollock could make some all-star teams. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- projectprospect 2009 Quantitative Draft Analysis: Player Pos Total Score 2009 Score VORP wOBA* Power BB% Dustin Ackley CF 579.277 602.5875 74.2728 0.5356 784.7824 16.3701 Jason Kipnis OF 575.435 589.9335 57.4955 0.4273 762.6842 17.4419 Marc Krauss 3B 544.072 560.2510 83.3105 0.5365 908.1905 17.4905 Rich Poythress 1B 542.900 555.8377 53.5346 0.5392 823.2762 14.0741 Tim Wheeler CF 536.983 596.3061 60.6665 0.5601 890.9195 11.6466 AJ Pollock CF 535.601 545.2548 42.7718 0.4715 643.6136 10.6383 Josh Phegley C 526.305 522.5816 51.8789 0.4723 690.6767 16.4835 Ryan Wheeler 1B 488.091 500.5199 29.7187 0.4301 664.9924 11.8280 Ben Paulsen 1B 469.056 472.0634 35.3916 0.4209 591.3151 10.4089 Grant Green SS 464.877 464.5687 27.7371 0.4507 557.2304 8.3682 Tony Sanchez C 427.305 456.3031 42.6574 0.4786 720.2167 11.4625 Brett Jackson CF 419.595 423.0183 24.6426 0.4536 707.7271 11.4625 Angelo Songco OF 416.429 416.6147 52.7581 0.4973 778.9055 15.2985 Jared Mitchell OF 395.416 423.7467 27.4737 0.3694 575.2133 20.0000 Matt den Dekker CF 391.950 348.3171 12.1176 0.3629 365.6016 12.8405 Kentrail Davis OF 381.812 374.0020 22.8936 0.4536 618.5879 12.8405 --
