In the Liga he has led the club to finish 6th (1998/1999), 1st (1999/2000), 2nd (2000/2001), 2nd (2001/2002) and 3rd (2002/2003) and now the club will not finish lower as the 4th place. Added to this stable Liga history is the fact that in the past four seasons Deportivo have become a European top club instead of a Spanish top club and that has made Irureta the most successful coach of Deportivo in their history. At the moment it looks like the Basque will coach start his seventh season in August as he could sign a renewal of his contract in May.
