DE PEDRO COULD COME THIS SUMMER 27th February 2004 Spanish international midfielder Francisco Javier De Pedro Falque, 30-years old, might become a Deportivo player this summer. De Pedro, who has played 12 matches for Spain so far, has been at Real Sociedad since 1993 and has played 321 matches for the club from San Sebastian (scoring 52 goals). This average of almost one goal per six matches indicates that he’s an offensive midfielder, normally situated at the left, who can be compared to Deportivo’s Fran. Fact is that De Pedro is four years younger than Fran and his contract runs out on 30 June of this season. De Pedro has already indicated that he probably won’t renew his contract at Real Sociedad. As Deportivo already have been after him for a while, this could be a golden opportunity to take him to La Coruna. At first sight that goes against the plans of Lendoiro to rejuvenate the squad of Deportivo. But at the same time both Lendoiro and Irureta have been looking for years for a possible replacement of Fran. And now this opportunity arises to sign De Pedro it should at least be given a try. His club Real Sociedad won’t be able to ask a transfersum while his current salary in the Basque country, of €400.000, can easily be matched by Deportivo. Meanwhile, the contract of Amavisca runs out while Fran has started playing at the centre instead of the left wing. De Pedro has always indicated that he would love to play in the English Premiership. But an offer of Deportivo could persuade him to stay in Spain and play at least another season of Champions League football. It seems that both parties already have been in contact and a deal could be struck within the next weeks.
