Darvish lived up to the hype, entertaining a sold-out crowd at Security Bank Ballpark. The right-hander worked five innings, striking out six and allowing three hits and one run. According to sports writer Will Korn, Darvish looked “sharp and efficient with an impressive repertoire that kept hitters off balance.” Korn added that Darvish relied on off-speed pitches, working his split-fingered pitches and curveballs down in the zone and getting RockHounds to chase and usually miss. Darvish threw 68 pitches (47 strikes). Those in attendance were “oooing” and “ahhing” at every Darvish punchout. Darvish exited after the fifth inning to a “YUUUU” chant from the RockHounds’ crowd. He was expected to work five innings or 75 pitches. The 11 a.m. start didn’t keep baseball fans away, and RockHounds officials found ways to have more tickets available for those who wanted to see Darvish, who is working his way back to the majors after his 2015 season was cut short by injury. Darvish, pitching for the Frisco Roughriders, the Rangers’ Double-A affiliate, allowed a run in his first inning. Darvish gave up a single to the RockHounds’ Yairo Munoz, who later came around to score on a wild pitch. In the second, the 6-foot-5 inch Darvish pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Darvish faced four batters in the bottom of the third. In the fourth, Darvish needed 19 pitches, striking out two and walking one.
