Slavik: Maybe it was more convenient, but we were very unsure in the beginning because we knew it is very difficult to be together all the time. We’d seen couples who were together start dancing together and then something didn’t work - the partnership or the relationship. So we were afraid, we had never wanted to dance together because we didn’t want to add a business relationship to our private one. But in the end, we did it. I had no partner and although I’d tried a few girls, nothing was working out. Karina split with Louis (van Amstel) - so we just decided to do it. DB: Why did you decide to dance for the USA. I know Karina is a U.S. citizen and was basically raised here, but you could have equally gone back to your country and competed from there. Slavik: I’d wanted to live in the USA for a long time and Karina was living in New York and had been dancing for the USA for a long time. I wanted to dance for this country because there are a lot of good professionals here and they really care about dancing a lot. In the Ukraine, there’s a lot of politics and it’s all about money, nobody cares about the dancing. I didn’t want to go back there and dance for them. DB: Let’s go back a little. I’ve interviewed Karina before, so our readers are familiar with her story, but what about you, when did you start dancing? Slavik: I started in the Ukraine when I was eleven. I started for a funny reason. When I was younger I was involved in swimming and I was quite good. My father was a surgeon and he had to move to a small town for work. There was no swimming pool there. So my parents were looking for something for me to do. My father was into body building, but I was too young for this. So my mother put me into dancing, until I was old enough for the body building. Well, I’m still dancing. DB: When did you meet Karina for the first time and how did you get together? Slavik: The first time I was still dancing for the Ukraine and Karina was dancing amateur for the U.S. I saw her at a world championship in Sweden, but we didn’t speak. Then we met again when she was dancing with Paul (Killick), then when she started to dance with Louis, we began to date. DB: How did this come about, did you ask her on a date? Slavik: No, we had been joking earlier at a competition in London, then later, we were staying at the same hotel. She was in the lobby, talking to her mother on the phone, and I just kissed her! Slavik: Yes, after I split with Joanna, I moved to the USA. I tried out with some ladies from USA as well as from Europe. Karina called me from Japan to tell me she split with Louis. When she came back we had some talks and decided to dance together. DB: Why did you split with Joanna? Slavik: We had very different personalities and we fought a lot. Before the World Championship in Miami, there was a lot of tension. After the goal of the world championship was over, we were still fighting ...... DB: It seems you guys also have a very “passionate” relationship! I was around you in Blackpool where the stakes are high and you are both very emotional. You’re like the spark and the dynamite. Does this interfere with your relationship off the floor? Karina: We are both very competitive - with each other and in the partnership. If he perfects something before me, then I try to do even better. That reflects in the dancing and outside. Slavik: When mistakes happen, I cannot say it’s my mistake and neither can Karina. We blame each other! We have similar personalities. DB: It’s exciting, but it’s also a bit frightening. I think the Americans are frightened, because you’ve come so far and we want a champion. Could your partnership explode? Karina: We do fight, every couple does. But if we take a step back, we’re very happy with each other. At the end of the day, we are a team. Because we’ve dated for three years, so we know what makes each other tick. Karina: Some couples try to go out to get a reaction from the audience. Karina: (laughing) Slavik: I think I will not be able to offer for the next ten or twenty years, because Karina has very expensive tastes! Slavik: I never considered myself a sex symbol. Not many women pay attention to me in normal life. I get more attention through my dancing. DB: Are you surprised that Karina was nominated? Slavik: Oh no, with Karina I’m not surprised.
