Agent says other teams remain in negotiations DETROIT -- The Tigers' pursuit of Magglio Ordonez reached a point of mutual int erest Thursday, when the free agent right fielder instructed agent Scott Boras to send the club a counter-proposal to their multiyear contract offer and conti nue negotiations. It does not make the Tigers his final choice among the six teams pursuing him; Boras told MLB.com that while he has been told to make a counter-proposal, he i s still negotiating with other teams. Nor does it necessarily mean the two side s are on the verge of a deal. But depending on how the Tigers respond, it could give Detroit the middle-of-the-order boost that they've been seeking since Nov ember. And considering how many other free agents have ended up in places other than Detroit this offseason, Ordonez's interest is a serious step forward for the Tigers. The Tigers made an offer to Ordonez on Wednesday on the heels of a meeting in M iami between Ordonez, Boras, owner Mike Ilitch, president/general manager Dave Dombrowski and manager Alan Trammell. While details of the original offer and t he counter-offer aren't known, it's believed to be a long-term contract. Dombrowski declined to comment other than to reiterate that they met Monday. Bo ras wouldn't cite details on the offer, but it's been known that he and Ordonez turned down a five-year, $70 million offer from the White Sox -- Ordonez's ori ginal team -- last year in hopes of drawing a longer contract. Boras did say, h owever, that they addressed any health concerns. That, of course, is the reason Ordonez remains on the market. While Ordonez, wh o turns 31 years old on Friday, enjoyed five consecutive seasons with at least a .301 average, 29 home runs and 99 RBIs, that streak ended last season when kn ee problems limited him to 52 games and 202 at-bats. He had two meniscus tears in his left knee repaired in separate surgeries, then was diagnosed with bone m arrow edema. He was cleared to resume baseball activities earlier this month. At this point, Boras said, the bone marrow edema has been the only question tea ms have asked about, and those have been answered to doctors' satisfaction. The fact that negotiations have reached this point without a workout reinforces th at notion. --
