1. Manny Machado, SS/3B, Dodgers Age: 26, WAR: 4.7, OPS+: 148 Machado and Bryce Harper will be this winter’s most sought-after free agents, and both are expected to break contract records because they are entering free agency at such a young age. Machado has had a dream free-agent season so far, another year of hitting .300 with 30-plus home runs. His ability to play both shortstop and third base increases his value and demand. The way he handled himself at the trade deadline, weathering a media firestorm as the Orioles were trying to trade him during the All-Star Game, was exceptional, showing class and integrity. He’s a Gold Glove-caliber third baseman, but an average or below-average defensive shortstop at this point. Because of that, I won’t be surprised if he signs with a team that insists he plays third instead of short, even though he clearly prefers the latter. 2. Bryce Harper, RF, Nationals Age: 25, WAR: 1.6, OPS+: 134 Harper’s strong second half, including a staggering .429 on-base percentage, has him right back on track to potentially receive the largest free agent contract in baseball history. Harper has once again delivered more than 30 homers, and his star power certainly will be a huge marketing draw for whichever big-market team signs him this offseason. The six-time All-Star and former NL MVP will get paid not only for his accomplishments to date, but because of his high ceiling and the fact that he’s just entering his prime years now — he will still be only 26 for all of next season. 4. Charlie Morton, RHP, Astros Age: 34, WAR: 3.1 ERA: 3.15, ERA+: 126 , WHIP: 1.197 Morton will lead the league in hit batters for the fourth time in six years, which just shows how badly he wants to own the inside part of the plate. Morton may be the best right-handed starting pitcher in this class. He made his first All-Star team this year, and his strikeout rate is the highest of his career at 11.0. He’s only allowed 118 hits in 152 innings while punching out a career-high 185 batters. His mid-90s fastball is explosive, his curveball is consistent and a wipeout pitch and his changeup is flat-out nasty and unhittable at times. Scouts are breathing heavy every time he pitches, and GMs are getting their owners’ checkbooks ready. There is a short-term deal with a high AAV in his future. 7. Andrew Miller, LHP, Indians Age: 33, WAR: 0.4, ERA: 3.38, ERA+:131 , WHIP: 1.292 Miller has battled both knee and shoulder issues this year, and will have to have a strong finish to September and a dominant October for him to get the type of contract he deserves. He’s still an elite player, and one of the best left-handed relief pitchers in the league when healthy. 10. Daniel Murphy, 2B, Cubs Age: 33, WAR: -0.8, OPS+: 107 Murphy can flat-out rake, and looks like he will enter free agency having proven that he’s finally 100 percent healthy. The one downside with Murphy is that it’s probably time to move him off of second base, and put him at either first base or designated hitter. The three-time All-Star should do well on a short-term deal. 18. Kelvin Herrera, RHR, Nationals Age: 28, WAR: 1.7, ERA: 2.44, ERA+: 178, Saves: 17 Herrera was leading all closers in ERA at 1.05 when he was traded from the Royals to the Nationals back in June, with a hits per nine rate of only 6.7. However, once he got to Washington his performance nosedived, with a 4.34 ERA and 11.6 hits per nine. His season ended prematurely when he underwent foot surgery for a torn Lisfranc ligament in his left foot.
