Starter talk behind him Rotation intrigues closer Dempster, but it will have to wait till next year June 24, 2007 BY GORDON WITTENMYER [email protected] Five weeks ago today, on the hyped stage of the first go-round against the White Sox this season, Cubs closer Ryan Dempster twisted in the wind between a plan to move him to the starting rotation and a last-minute change of that plan. Barely a month later, he's such a valuable member of the Cubs' resurgent bullpen that the muscle twinge in his left side that kept him from pitching the ninth inning against the Sox on Saturday might be a big blow to the Cubs if it lingers beyond the additional day or two he expects to be sidelined. Yet the closer, whose velocity has topped 95 mph in recent weeks -- even after suffering the injury Friday -- and might pitch his way into All-Star consideration with a strong return this week, still has his eye on the starting job manager Lou Piniella proposed last month. ''Absolutely,'' he said. ''I think I can do a really good job of it.'' He did well enough early in his career to make the National League All-Star team with the Florida Marlins in 2000, when he won 14 games and pitched 226 2/3 innings, the first of four consecutive seasons topping 200 innings. ''I was young and kind of mentally immature then,'' he said. ''I think I'm a little bit smarter and a little bit wiser. I know some of the tendencies of hitters a little bit better and know how to pitch better than I did then. I'd like the opportunity to do that.'' When Piniella reversed course on the decision last month, he told Dempster he'd get that opportunity at some point, although it's not likely to happen as long as Dempster keeps pitching the way he has lately in the ninth inning and the team keeps plugging along at its 12-8 pace since opening June with back-to-back losses. Besides, the club's first option to groom for the role, Angel Guzman, is on the disabled list (forearm) and far from returning. If Dempster gets a shot to start before next spring, Carlos Marmol, who has been dominating in recent weeks, is the obvious choice to ease into the late-inning situations. Nobody has told Marmol to expect that, but the right-hander with the hard fastball, nasty slider and 0.96 ERA said he thinks he can do it. And Piniella seems receptive to the idea. ''We're using him in the middle- to late-inning situations, and he's done a nice job,'' he said. ''He goes after you, and he's got good stuff. You've got to like his progress.'' Maybe enough that by next spring, Dempster might get that second chance to become a regular starter for the first time since 2003. ''I'm sure that's something we'll have a look at after the season,'' Dempster said. ''But I'm being honest with you when I say I don't think about it because I don't think that's fair to the team to be worrying about that. I'll just worry about going out there and closing as many games out as possible.'' He has done it well enough to have 16 saves in 18 chances and a 3.38 ERA despite some rough outings the first two months. Dempster is 8-for-9 with a 1.76 ERA since that whole closer-to-starter-and-back-again saga last month. Talk about a turnaround in the last month -- not to mention from a 2006 season in which he went 1-9 with a 4.80 ERA. Maybe that shake-up talk shot some adrenaline though Dempster? ''Actually, I think it was the game before that weekend, that game in New York,'' he said, referring to a ninth-inning meltdown in which he gave up five runs and got just one out in blowing a 5-1 lead against the Mets. ''I wasn't happy with how I allowed that to happen. I felt like I was being un-aggressive.
