Maddux to Cubs? You never know MADDUX可能會回來(事實上他在文中還滿喜歡芝加哥的),不過重點是要能贏 如果沒人找她簽約的話 他大概會去打GOLF吧XDDDD 另外 打算簽另一名教練 DeJesus By Barry Rozner Daily Herald Sports Columnist Posted Wednesday, November 22, 2006 It’s very difficult to imagine Greg Maddux pitching anywhere other than Southern California in 2007. He has a home there, he was successful there after leaving the Cubs last summer, and there are three teams in the vicinity with money to spend and a chance to win. Yet, Maddux says he’s ruled out nothing — including Chicago and the Cubs. “No, man, I haven’t decided anything yet,’’ Maddux said Tuesday from Las Vegas, where he was driving home from his daughter’s Thanksgiving play. “I think you leave all your options open and then make a decision based on what’s best for you personally. “I definitely want to play again and hopefully someone will want me. Then, it’s a matter of finding the right spot for my wife and kids.’’ When Maddux was traded July 31, he left behind a Cubs team whose manager had given up and an organization without a clue or a plan. Now, the Cubs are throwing all caution to the wind — and money all over the place — in an attempt to win immediately, and they have a manager who would appreciate the veteran presence Maddux offers. Other than location, the Cubs would seem to be a fit for Maddux, who also wants to win immediately. Furthermore, Maddux is the type of mid-level, free-agent starter the Cubs need. Actually, they need a couple of guys just like him who can take the ball 34 times and give them 210 innings and about 15 victories. “Chicago was great. I mean, if you can’t have fun playing baseball in Chicago, you can’t have fun anywhere,’’ Maddux said. “I think I know where I want to go and what I want to do, but hey, somebody has to offer you a job. “If nobody does, I’ll be on a plane over to Ireland for a few weeks of golf.’’ That’s not going to happen next spring because Maddux will have no shortage of offers, including some very good ones on the Left Coast, where he also has a beachfront home. “I had a blast in Los Angeles,’’ Maddux said of the Dodgers, for whom he went 6-3 in 12 starts over two months with a 3.30 ERA in 73 innings. “We went to the postseason and it’s a great place to play, great place to pitch, with a great atmosphere. “And when you got a guy like (Rafael) Furcal behind you that catches everything, that helps a lot, too. “I just love to play the game, even more than when I first started. I think the beauty of the whole thing is as long as you’re still playing ball, you really can’t make a bad decision as far as where you go. “I think I can still play good enough to be around awhile. Yeah, I’m not as good as I once was, but I think I’m still good enough to help someone win.’’ For the moment, Maddux is focused on a holiday week at home with the kids, and then a Hawaii trip that will celebrate wife Kathy’s 40th birthday, along with her twin sister. “Then, I’ll come home and see what’s what with free agency,’’ said Maddux, who turns 41 in April. “It’s probably true that the place for me personally, in terms of location, is more important than financially, and if you can combine the two, great. “But I haven’t ruled out anything. You just gotta sit back and wait and let it play out, and then make the best decision you can.’’ And that plan isn’t going to include Ireland for several more years. Pitching glitch Have baseball teams learned nothing from the White Sox’ World Series victory in 2005? The Sox didn’t reinvent the game, but they did prove you could still win with the basics, getting solid pitching, great relief, good defense and small ball. And, yet, so many teams are put together like slow-pitch softball teams. Go figure. Higher and higher The Cubs may be starting a new trend by bringing back Ivan DeJesus and signing Alfonso Soriano. Speedy leadoff men who steal a lot of bases? No. High-pants wearers, like the kind who buckle their belt just under their chin. You’ve got your low-talkers, high-talkers and close-talkers, and these are your high-pants wearers. Hey, there are all kinds of fashion statements in baseball. There are short pants, long pants, high stirrups, low stirrups, dirty socks, filthy caps and disgusting helmets. And some guys like to wear their pants up around the chest. DeJesus was way up there, while Soriano isn’t as extreme. Some of the greats in history — Cy Young, Pete Rose, Lou Boudreau — were high-pants guys. You can look it up. There’s no more Ladies Day, so this might be a good way to sell tickets and boost TV ratings. Seriously, why do you think Mark Grace was always in that crouch at first base? Think he was bent over looking for loose change? This could be the first team on which everyone wears their pants up around their armpits. You never know. Crazy is as crazy does I resent being called a moron (or pick your insult) by some of you because I wrote yesterday that if the Cubs improve their pitching, they could win the World Series next year. There’s a thousand other things that make me a moron — starting with perhaps that last item — but I don’t think suggesting the Cubs can win next year is one of them. In the immortal words of Bill Murray, I don’t have to take this abuse from you. I’ve got hundreds of people dying to abuse me. Bull stuff Interesting to hear Bulls analysts Norm Van Lier and Stacey King echo what we’ve been saying for two years about the Bulls’ sluggish offense. On nights when they’re ice cold, they can’t have the guards dribble out the shot clock every time down the floor and then shoot a 23-footer at the buzzer. We still say it’s worth a try posting up Ben Gordon, Kirk Hinrich or Luol Deng. What do you have to lose? Whatever happened to ... ... Eli Manning? And finally ... NBC’s Jay Leno, on Fox dumping O.J. Simpson’s book/TV deal: “Canceling the show wasn’t the hard part. The hard part was deciding which executive was going to tell O.J. about it.’’ -- you wanna go back? --
