Police arrested Leuea on Wednesday and charged him with aggravated sexual assault - victim under the age of 16 years. Leuea, also known as Amitaunai Neru, asked not to be brought into court when the case was mentioned in Wagga Local Court on Thursday morning. He did not apply for bail, and it was formally refused by magistrate Erin Kennedy. The case was adjourned to November 18, at which time the 49-year-old parish priest of St Mel's might apply for bail. It is alleged Leuea assaulted the girl between September, 2002, and January, 2003. Police are taking steps to suspend Leuea from his duties as a police chaplain. Leuea took up his appointment at St Mel's in October last year after a passionate Facebook campaign to keep him at the Yenda-Yoogali-Hanwood parish in Griffith failed. His duty solicitor in Wagga Local Court, David Barron, asked Corrective Service officers to place Leuea in protective custody. Ms Kennedy ordered the prosecution to prepare a brief of evidence by January 6. A statement released by the Bishop of the Wagga Diocese, Gerard Hanna, said Leuea had been stood down pending the outcome of the police investigation. "I acknowledge that this news will cause a great deal of shock and distress within the diocese," Bishop Hanna said. "I wish to reassure members of the parishes affected that we remain mindful of this and will continue to provide support to them in whatever capacity that support is needed." --
