They fell behind midway through the first half in Aldershot as Viktor Gyokeres broke the deadlock from the penalty spot, however it was two goals in 11 minutes either side of the break that damaged them most. Aaron Connolly fired through the legs of Marcin Bulka after a quick counter-attack just before the interval and Jordan Davies made it 3-0 with a close-range finish. The positives for Joe Edwards’s youngsters came thereafter, character and belief inspiring a spirited fightback, and goals from Billy Gilmour and Tino Anjorin gave hope for a late rally. However, it ultimately proved too little, too late as the Seagulls condemned us to a third league defeat of the season. Edwards made three changes from an impressive victory at Manchester City last weekend, bringing Bulka, Josh Grant and Tariq Uwakwe back into the team. A back three of Richard Nartey, Marc Guehi and Grant provided protection for our Polish keeper, with Tariq Lamptey and Juan Castillo retained as ever-present wing-backs. George McEachran was the only other member of the group to have started all eight of our previous PL2 outings and the 18-year-old continued at the base of midfield, alongside Gilmour and Uwakwe. Martell Taylor-Crossdale and Daishawn Redan combined for the partnership up front as Edwards opted for 3-5-2 once again. https://i.imgur.com/pMNzcLW.jpg Brighton started the day two places and one point behind the Blues having lost just once to date in their maiden season in the top division. Their 5-0 win over City in August was an obvious indication of their strength and they were sure to prove stern opponents as Edwards's side searched for only their second league win in 2018. On a bright but cold afternoon in Aldershot, the contest was well-matched in the opening exchanges. The hosts probed questioningly when in possession but the Seagulls contained and countered, growing in attacking threat. Aaron Connolly had the game's first attempt, a quick shot taken on the spin and comfortably gathered low by Bulka, before centre-back Ben Barclay blocked bravely to get in the way of Taylor-Crossdale's drive. The Blues were combining well to craft some neat forward moves, stretching the pitch with their width but struggling to fashion any clear opportunities to test Hugo Keto in the Brighton goal. Gilmour did find himself in space on the edge of the box after 20 minutes and shifted on to his dangerous right foot but the Scotland Under-21 international got the execution of his effort all wrong and fired the ball high and wide into the stand. Down the other end, pressure was building and Mattius Norman provided a warning with a stinging drive from the right that Bulka did well to palm away. It was after failing to clear the resulting corner that Edwards's boys fell behind a quarter of the way into the contest. https://i.imgur.com/eQoW3Ey.jpg Daishawn Redan attempts to squeeze between two defenders Brighton recycled the ball to sustain their threat and Norman's jinking run into the box drew a clumsy foul from Guehi. The Swedish forward Gyokeres stepped up from 12 yards and confidently dispatched the spot-kick into the corner of the net to give his side an advantage. It was the fourth occasion in five home games this term that our youngsters had conceded first so a familiar task of coming from behind lay in front of them. Gilmour spurned a good chance to trouble Keto moments after the opening goal, firing a free-kick well over the crossbar, before Brighton's threat on the break was displayed as Connolly struck just off-target. Our best moment of the half came 11 minutes before the break when Taylor-Crossdale came closest than any of the boys in blue to scoring. Lamptey provided the delivery from the right and the striker turned the ball towards goal with a stooping header that brushed the wrong side of Keto's left post. https://i.imgur.com/VretiJo.jpg Taylor-Crossdale challenges for the ball The Seagulls soared higher still with their second goal of the half moments before the break, Gyokeres trapping a hopeful clearance upfield and initiating an attack that ended with Connolly slotting the ball between the legs of Bulka. It sent the hosts in 2-0 down at half-time and with a sizeable task ahead in the second period. Edwards decided to make a change at the interval in an attempt to inspire his team into improvement, handing a development squad debut to 16-year-old Anjorin. However, Brighton's third goal seven minutes after the restart felt like a significant moment in the match and curtailed any hopes of a Chelsea comeback. Davies was the scorer, turning beyond Bulka after an intricate passing move down the right from Simon Rusk's side. The keeper then reached down low to his left to make a stretching save and keep the deficit at three as Gyokeres threatened once again by cutting inside from the left and firing for the bottom corner. We continued to compete and work hard across the field, belief that was rewarded with a spirited fightback in the final 20 minutes. The manager's changes paid off as both Anjorin and Conor Gallagher played key roles in helping the hosts to net twice in three minutes. The latter stepped up first, sensing the opportunity to latch on to a loose ball, and it was Norman who turned from penalty winner to penalty conceder as he bundled into the midfielder. Gilmour took the responsibility and slotted in his sixth goal of the season. https://i.imgur.com/ZtcfjQt.jpg Gilmour slots in the spot-kick to start a commendable fightback Within three minutes, it was 3-2. Gallagher went down again in the box, this time with no reward, but the appeals caused a moment's confusion in the Brighton 18-yard area. The ball rolled into the path of Anjorin, who swivelled instinctively and fired expertly left-footed into the bottom corner for a debut goal. It was game on for the final 15 minutes and the contest's momentum had firmly swung in favour of the Blues. Taylor-Crossdale flashed the ball just wide from the right and Keto gathered Nartey's header before Lamptey and Gilmour combined to create two presentable chances. https://i.imgur.com/qD2ekpR.jpg Tino Anjorin fires into the bottom corner for a debut goal The wing-back first cut back invitingly into the path of the midfielder, who fired straight at the Finnish goalkeeper, before a delivery in the air was headed goalwards but grasped gratefully by Keto. Desperation intensified as the clock ticked on and Brighton's efforts to cling on to the points became increasingly last-ditch. Anjorin went closest with a header over from Castillo's inswinging corner and a swerving strike that was impressively kept out by the visiting goalkeeper. Even later into added time, Bulka came charging forward to add his sizeable frame to a crowded penalty area for a corner, though Brighton survived and took the points to leapfrog us in the table. The development squad have the chance for redemption in three days' time as they travel to Plymouth Argyle in the Checkatrade Trophy on Tuesday evening.
