Under-18s report: Man United 0 Chelsea 3
Sat 5 May 2018
Our youngsters picked up an unprecedented fourth trophy of the year as
they were crowned Under-18 national champions for the second successive
season.
Jody Morris's side had already collected the Under-18 Premier League
southern title, Under-18 Premier League Cup and FA Youth Cup before
travelling north to Manchester for the national final, which pits the
northern and southern winners against each other in a one-off contest. The
Blues not only needed a win to retain their title but also to secure
qualification for next season's UEFA Youth League as domestic champions.
Dujon Sterling set us on the way with an opener inside five minutes,
reward for a bright start from the visitors, but Manchester United grew
stronger as the half progressed and went in for the break in the
ascendancy. However, it is goals that win games and, in this case, titles.
Two strikes in six minutes after the restart gave Morris's men one hand on
the silverware as Billy Gilmour and then Tariq Lamptey found the back of
the net. Despite a red card shown to Gilmour with a quarter of an hour
remaining, the result never seemed in doubt from the moment Lamptey made
it 3-0.
With plenty at stake for the Blues, Morris selected a strong side from the
start with just two changes made from our FA Youth Cup final win over
Arsenal earlier in the week. Daishawn Redan and Tino Anjorin, both scorers
against the Gunners, were absent due to international duty at the Under-17
European Championship, which meant a return to the team for Charlie Brown
up front.
Morris switched to four at the back and lined up with Lamptey, Reece
James, Marc Guehi and Juan Castillo across the defence in front of
goalkeeper Jamie Cumming. Callum Hudson-Odoi, George McEachran and
Sterling supported Brown in attack, while Gilmour partnered skipper Conor
Gallagher in central midfield.
United finished top of the northern section six points clear of rivals Man
City in second place and they included the league's second-top goalscorer
up front, schoolboy striker Mason Greenwood. Angel Gomes also started for
Kieran McKenna's Reds, one of five members of England's Under-17 World
Cup-winning squad to start in the Manchester sunshine.
The importance of striking early in significant games cannot be
underestimated and the visitors made a bright start on the big stage.
Matej Kovar, United's Czech keeper, gathered Guehi's header at the second
attempt with 60 seconds on the clock before Morris's men struck the opener
inside five minutes. Progress was made down the left flank, spearheaded by
Hudson-Odoi, and United's failure to clear their lines allowed Sterling
the chance to slot in a confident finish for the opener.
Cumming remained on alert down the other end. Having initially made a low
save from Nishan Burkart before the breakthrough, our keeper did well to
claw away Gomes's goal-bound inswinging corner as the hosts sought a quick
response.
Yet it was the Blues in control of possession in the first quarter of this
final, patiently moving the ball around and exploring for options to find
a way through United's rearguard. Guehi's stride forward from central
defence created space and his left-footed shot was spilled by Kovar into
the path of Hudson-Odoi, though the forward's effort on the rebound was
well blocked.
The hosts finally settled midway through the first period and started to
cause problems of their own. Greenwood threatened for the first time,
using quick footwork on the edge of the 18-yard box to get a shot away and
force Cumming into a fine save down low to his left. United then had an
audible appeal for a penalty as Lamptey flew into a crunching tackle on
full-back Brandon Williams but our diminutive defender appeared to win
enough of the ball and the referee waved play on.
Tahith Chong then fired a shot off-target after sloppy play out from the
back by the Blues before the same United man threatened with a mazy run
from the right, his progress finally thwarted by countryman Castillo.
There was still time remaining in the half for one last Chelsea attack and
Kovar had to make a smart save to keep out Hudson-Odoi's attempt from the
left before the whistle sounded.
There was a feeling the visitors would be improved after a talk with their
manager at the break and they resumed with greater intensity and attacking
verve. A fortunate ricochet saw Brown advance towards goal before a
well-timed tackle from Dishon Bernard, the former Chelsea schoolboy,
halted the danger.
However, two goals in six minutes effectively ended this final as a
contest. Gilmour made it 2-0 just before the hour mark, a goal which owed
a lot to the vision and craft of McEachran, who clipped a right-sided
free-kick back to the Glaswegian midfielder on the edge of the box.
Gilmour's volley was a little scuffed hit into the ground but it spun away
from Kovar and squirmed into the bottom corner.
Cumming had made a few key interventions in the opening hour and was
required to play his part once again minutes after our second goal. Gomes
provided the threat from the left and hit an arrowing drive towards the
far corner but Cumming palmed it out and Castillo flicked the loose ball
to safety.
The killer third goal came with 64 minutes played and was fittingly scored
by Lamptey, our only league ever-present this term. Patient play from
Brown in the box allowed the overlapping full-back the chance to get
forward and his finish after receiving the pass was emphatic, fired high
into the roof of the net and leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.
Action was minimal in the final 25 minutes, particularly after two
bookings in quick succession forced the visitors down to 10 men with the
dismissal of Gilmour. Hudson-Odoi was twice denied by Kovar and then as
Lee O'Connor cleared from underneath his own crossbar, but the Blues
managed the game maturely in the final stages as they counted down the
minutes until their latest coronation.
After the final whistle, there was that familiar sight once again –
Chelsea Under-18s lifting silverware into the air as they celebrated an
historic quadruple.

Under-18s reaction: Special season
Mon 7 May 2018
An unprecedented season of silverware success for our Under-18s was
completed at the weekend as Jody Morris's side beat Manchester United in
the national league final to collect a fourth trophy of the campaign.
The young Blues had already lifted the FA Youth Cup, Under-18 Premier
League southern title and Under-18 Premier League Cup before travelling to
the north-west for the one-off meeting between the regional league
champions. United were drawn with home advantage but that failed to faze
Morris's men, who won 3-0 in Leigh to finish a remarkable season with the
full array of trophies available to them.
After the game, Morris reflected on another special season for his
youngsters, praising the group effort and the bar-raising standards they
have set.
'This is the accumulation of a lot of hard work that started in pre-season
for us,' said Morris. 'There are players who haven't played in the final
but who have played a big part throughout the season because we've set new
levels and new records for the Under-18s this year. I'm extremely proud of
everyone involved.
'It's probably the best season ever for the Chelsea youth team. Last year
we won everything we could and this season, with a new cup competition
added to the programme, we've won four trophies. Nobody has ever done that
before. Prior to last season, the last time our club won the league and FA
Youth Cup Double was in 1961 so that just shows the history we're making.'
On the performance against the Red Devils in the north-west, Morris cited
defensive resilience and a clinical edge at the other end of the field as
key factors behind the victory.
'We've definitely played better but it was a professional performance in
the end,' he continued. 'We could have been a bit better on the ball but
we punished them at times and our work in the defensive third was very
good. I felt we were defensively very solid and when we started looking
good on the ball in the second half, we ended up scoring the goals that
finished the game.
'Man United are a really good team, they're the champions of the northern
section, so to come away and get a 3-0 victory is a big result.'
Ending the campaign as national champions, for the second year in a row,
also means the Blues will return to European football next season in the
UEFA Youth League, regardless of whether the first team finish in the
Premier League top four. The domestic champions pathway runs alongside the
group stage and will provide us with a different route to the last-16 of a
competition we finished runners-up in this term.
'This was our most important game of the season because playing European
football next year is a big thing for all of us,' explained Billy Gilmour,
who scored our second goal in Manchester.
'It was a bit of a blow in the first half because United had more of the
ball and were creating a few chances but we changed our shape at half-time
and that helped us get on top.'
Gilmour was a summer signing from Rangers and he praised the environment
of working alongside talented team-mates as a particularly important part
of the team's success this season.
'It's great to come into training every day and know you're working with
top players who are going to push you to your best,' added the Glaswegian.
'We're always on it every day and the coaching staff have to take credit
for that because they put a lot of time and effort in behind the scenes.
We have amazing team spirit throughout the group and this is what happens
when you bring it all together – another trophy, another medal, four in
one season!'
Tariq Lamptey added our third six minutes after Gilmour's strike to
effectively end the final as a contest and he admitted it was a special
feeling to win trophies alongside team-mates he'd grown up with at the
Chelsea Academy.
'You can never get used to winning trophies but it's another fantastic
achievement from the lads,' said Lamptey. 'We all work so hard - players
and staff - to achieve this so it's another brilliant day. Everyone is
delighted because four trophies in one season is special.
'We've all been playing together from a young age so we have that bond and
togetherness which means we go out and fight for each other on the pitch.
We love working hard and we do it every day in training. It's just amazing
to win trophies with your friends and people you've known for such a long
time.
'Jody and all the staff push us hard every day – they don't let us take
our foot off the gas for one minute and winning four trophies is testament
to that.'
