Tottenham led from the 16th minute but survived conceding a penalty early in the second period before going on to score two further goals. It proved only our second loss this season in all competitions, highlighting more the exceptional standards set by this young group, who have already won two trophies and have two further finals still to come. There were six changes from the side that won at West Ham last weekend to secure the Under-18 Premier League southern title, with the trophy hunt shifting focus to the Under-19s and their UEFA Youth League semi-final against Porto on Friday. Schoolboys James Clark and Henry Lawrence came in for their youth team debuts, though a core of regulars remained in the form of Marcel Lavinier, Tariq Uwakwe, Martell Taylor-Crossdale and captain Billy Gilmour. Morris reverted to 4-2-3-1 with Clark, Lavinier, Jack Wakely and Jon Panzo lining up right to left across the defence in front of keeper Karlo Ziger. Gilmour anchored in central midfield alongside Clinton Mola, while Lawrence, Uwakwe and Tushaun Walters provided the attacking support for Taylor-Crossdale up front. Spurs were seeking revenge for knockouts this term in the Premier League Cup and FA Youth Cup, with their starting line-up containing eight of those who featured in the fifth round defeat in February. They started on the front foot in the sun at Cobham, hassling the league champions and finding pockets of space between our midfield and defence. Oliver Skipp struck the contest's first shot inside five minutes but Wakely blocked well before Griffiths dragged a chance just wide of the far post after a neat pass forward from Dilan Markanday. The visitors made much of the early running and soon found the breakthrough after a quarter of an hour as league top scorer Griffiths edged closer to the golden boot. There was more than a slice of good fortune to his 22nd goal of the campaign after a strike from 18 yards deflected off Wakely and looped up agonisingly over Ziger and into the net. Spurs continued to create and might have had a second within minutes of opening the scoring. Phoenix Patterson fashioned a great sight at goal after slipping in unchecked down the inside-left channel but his right-foot effort missed the target before Markanday fired wide from 20 yards. Our best opportunity of the first period fell to Taylor-Crossdale, the striker released by a lovely pass over the top by Uwakwe, though his finish lacked composure and flew harmlessly wide of Jonathan de Bie's near post. Lavinier then made an important block to thwart Markanday before Panzo cleared the danger from the six-yard box after Ziger had spilled a corner as the Blues went into the break requiring improvement. Morris made alterations at half-time, introducing Renedi Masampu and switching to three at the back, which paid immediate dividends. The hosts had a perfect opportunity to equalise within five minutes of the restart. Lavinier advanced from central defence and the move ended with Taylor-Crossdale sent tumbling by Timothy Eyoma. It was clumsy as the England Under-18 defender went to ground and the officials conferred to award a penalty. Taylor-Crossdale stepped up but his effort from 12 yards lacked conviction and Tottenham's Belgian keeper dropped low to his left and made the stop. It was an incident that sparked us into life and our best attacking spell of the game. Laviner's back-post header bounced just over the bar before Oliver Skipp made a crucial clearance to steer Gilmour's dangerous inswinging free-kick away from danger. The Blues lacked experience and a little incision in the final third. Taylor-Crossdale slotted a neat pass into the feet of Walters but the forward's first touch was a heavy one and the momentary sight at goal was gone. Scott Parker's side added two late goals to give the scoreline a more emphatic look. Substitute Rodel Richards capitalised on some slack defensive work to slot a patient finish low into the bottom corner before Markanday added a third by converting at the back post from Tariq Hinds's low delivery. It capped a disappointing day for Morris's men, a first home loss in 58 matches stretching back to April 2015. Nevertheless, with the title already secured and the opportunity taken to hand out a pair of schoolboy debuts, priorities remain in the latter stages of other competitions. Our Under-19s take on Porto in the UEFA Youth League semi-final at the end of the week in Switzerland, while the youth team have an FA Youth Cup final later in the month.
