Under-18s report: Chelsea 4 Southampton 0
Sat 7 Apr 2018
It is now over three years undefeated at home for Chelsea Under-18s as
Jody Morris's side recorded another impressive victory to move them a
point away from the southern title.
While slow out of the blocks at Cobham, and perhaps fortunate not to
concede as Southampton made a bright start, Tariq Uwakwe fired us in front
just before the break. Three further goals in seven minutes after the
restart sealed the points as Martell Taylor-Crossdale, Tino Anjorin and
Marc Guehi all netted to secure a 13th win in a row for the young Blues,
who will retain the Under-18 Premier League South title with a point away
at West Ham next weekend.
Six starters from Wednesday's FA Youth Cup win at Birmingham City retained
their place in the team for the visit of Southampton, the only side to
have beaten our youngsters this season.
Karlo Ziger returned in goal behind a back four consisting of Jon Panzo,
Guehi, Marcel Lavinier and Tariq Lamptey, the latter continuing his run as
our only league ever-present this term. Taylor-Crossdale led the line up
front supported by an attacking midfield trio of Uwakwe, George McEachran
and Anjorin, while Billy Gilmour partnered skipper Conor Gallagher deeper
in midfield.
Southampton arrived at Cobham as the team to have inflicted two of our
four defeats under Morris since the start of 2016/17, with their 4-0
victory back in October still raw for a group not used to losing, even
less so by such significant margins. Yet the Saints showed in the early
stages the characteristics that have made them such a tough opponent to
take on.
Gilmour and Uwakwe had early strikes at goal, the latter's curling attempt
towards the far corner plucked from the air by keeper Adam Parkes, but it
was Kornelius Hansen who went close to breaking the deadlock in the
opening 15 minutes. The wideman pounced on a slip from Panzo and advanced
towards the box, jinking inside before bending a left-footed shot narrowly
wide of Ziger's upright.
Striker Michael Obafemi then utilised his blistering pace to drive beyond
Lavinier down the inside-left channel but his low effort at goal lacked
the power or precision to trouble our Croatian keeper. A positive moment
for the hosts was soon fashioned down the right as Uwakwe and Lamptey
combined neatly to set the overlapping full-back running clear down the
wing, though McEachran was unable to connect with a header in the box.
Southampton enjoyed their best spell of the contest midway through the
first period, upping the pressure in the final third and forcing us into
defending deep inside the box. Ziger punched clear and Lavinier headed
away before Harry Hamblin spurned an opening at the back post as he nodded
harmlessly over from a corner.
Their best chance was created 10 minutes before the break after Hansen
worked a crossing position and delivered from the right, with the ball
eventually laid off to the supporting midfielder Sean Brennan. His effort
was sweetly struck and left Ziger rooted to the spot but smacked the post
and bounced clear.
Such spurned opportunities can often be rued at Cobham for visiting teams
and within five minutes it was 1-0 to Chelsea. Anjorin had sparked into
life with a dangerous drive infield from the left, teeing up Gilmour to
hit a deflected shot just wide, before Uwakwe notched the opener after 41
minutes. The midfielder lurked in the box as Panzo persisted down the left
and eventually latched on to the left-back's low cross to steer a finish
inside the far post.
The advantage was perhaps harsh on the Saints and Morris will have
demanded more from his players during their half-time briefing. Their
response was emphatic as a blistering restart took the game away from
Southampton. Gilmour fired a warning shot when he struck the woodwork from
12 yards, while Anjorin's header dropped agonisingly wide following more
good build-up play from the lively Uwakwe.
Our second goal arrived three minutes before the hour mark and came as the
result of an incisive attacking move with the ball eventually delivered by
Lamptey and swept home from close range by Taylor-Crossdale for the
striker's 20th goal of the campaign.
Within seven minutes, the points looked safe for Morris's men as a 4-0
lead was established. Schoolboy midfielder Anjorin claimed the third while
knowing very little about it, the ball bouncing off the post from Uwakwe's
fierce shot and hitting the 16-year-old to divert back across the line.
Gilmour then turned supplier with an inviting inswinging corner that
evaded everyone but Guehi at the back post and the defender was left with
the simple task of heading in his eighth goal of the season.
The margin of victory could have been greater for the Blues. Panzo was
denied by a smart save from Parkes as he rampaged forward on the
counter-attack, while Uwakwe earned a sight at goal with a clever
right-to-left run but could not hit the target on his favoured left foot.
Down the other end, Ziger remained alert to preserve a clean sheet, our
eighth in nine games and 20th of another impressive term. Arsenal's home
defeat at the hands of Leicester City meant our lead at the top of the
Under-18 Premier League South extends to 12 points, meaning a draw away at
West Ham next weekend will secure a fourth consecutive southern title.
