Under-18s report: Sunderland 1-2 Chelsea (aet)
Sat 27 Jan 2018
Our youngsters were winners on Wearside as they advanced to the Under-18
Premier League Cup semi-finals, though it took extra-time and a penalty
save right at the death to ensure progress.
This was a game that had all the entertainment and drama of a traditional
cup tie, with three spot-kicks and tension right until the final whistle
at Sunderland's Academy of Light. A pair of second-half penalties, scored
by Conor Gallagher and Sam Greenwood, ensured parity at the end of 90
minutes before Juan Castillo's strike settled the tie in extra-time.
It was close to needing a shootout to settle as the Black Cats were
awarded the third penalty of the game three minutes over the two-hour
mark, though Karlo Ziger went from being booked for the foul to making the
crucial save as he denied Greenwood and helped us into the last four in
the inaugural youth team cup competition.
There were four changes from our 2-0 league victory over Norwich City last
weekend as George McEachran, Tariq Uwakwe, Castillo and Gallagher all
returned to the starting team. Three of the quartet started in the engine
room as we opted for a 3-4-2-1 system and a box in midfield, McEachran and
Billy Gilmour operating deeper behind Gallagher and Uwakwe.
Castillo lined up on the left and Tariq Lamptey on the right as wing-backs
returned, while Marc Guehi, Jack Wakely and Jon Panzo sandwiched in
between, protecting Ziger. Martell Taylor-Crossdale led the line up front.
The visitors started brightest on a bleak morning in the cold and windy
north-east, with Lamptey fashioning an early chance after skipping away
from Williams Kokolo and into space down the right flank. His early
delivery was inviting for Taylor-Crossdale but the striker could not guide
his finish with the sufficient accuracy to test Anthony Patterson in the
Sunderland goal.
Chelsea lined up with three central defenders and wing-backs designed to
provide width to their attacking strategy. However, the Black Cats were
threatening to orchestrate their own downfall in the early exchanges with
some risky build-up play from the goalkeeper that lacked precision and
purpose. Gallagher almost capitalised on one loose pass out but could not
pick out Taylor-Crossdale with a ball from the right.
The Academy of Light is renowned for its difficult playing conditions,
with the coastal location providing high winds that can influence
proceedings. The elements were at play after 10 minutes as Uwakwe's lofted
corner sailed into the six-yard box, though Guehi's headed bounced just
wide.
Patterson gathered routinely to collect Uwakwe's dipping drive before
Rayed Derbali made an impressive block to deny Taylor-Crossdale, who took
aim from 10 yards out. Gilmour's corner then required clawing to safety
from the Sunderland stopper as the Blues made much of the early running.
The home side carved out their first chance after half hour, with Bali
Mumba finding Tom Scothern on the right and the latter delivering a
dangerous ball across the face of Ziger's goal. Robbie Dunne, the striker,
was eager to convert it but the cross stayed just out of his reach.
With manager Jody Morris absent through illness, assistant Ed Brand was
handed responsibilities in charge of the away side and his half-time team
talk might have been a bit different had the best chance of the half been
taken eight minutes before the interval.
McEachran instigated the danger with a diagonal free-kick towards the back
post, where Guehi had escaped into space to knock the ball back towards
Taylor-Crossdale. The striker looked primed to provide the finish but
Patterson was given enough of a chance to palm the ball away as he raced
across his goal-line.
The restart was short-lived before Patterson was forced to withdraw from
the action following a clattering with Taylor-Crossdale, a change which
saw the introduction of Michael Woud, the 18-year-old who would play a
leading part in the rest of the contest.
Before then, Sunderland enjoyed a productive period. Greenwood shot wide
after good work down the left from the rapid Kokolo, while Jordan Hickey's
mishit cross had Ziger scrambling before the Croatian was able to collect.
That acted as a warning sign for the visitors, one they heeded by upping
the ante and ultimately taking the lead midway through the second period.
Gallagher was twice denied, initially following neat combination play with
Uwakwe and then as his powerful drive from outside the box was bravely
blocked. Castillo then spurned a good opportunity at the back post as he
received Lamptey's cross from the opposite flank before the first goal of
the game duly arrived.
Woud was guilty of some rash goalkeeping, racing off his line in a chase
for the ball with Taylor-Crossdale after Lamptey had played an inviting
pass down the inside-right channel. The forward, sharper and quicker in
covering the yards, got the first touch and Woud was unable to stop his
momentum from taking him down. Gallagher stepped up and dinked a
delightful effort right down the middle for his sixth goal of the season.
If the Blues thought that was the route to a comfortable victory, they
were quite mistaken as Sunderland earned a spot-kick of their own moments
later. Greenwood advanced down the left and fell down under the challenge
of Lamptey, who protested his innocence. The referee had little hesitation
in awarding a second penalty inside three minutes and Greenwood dusted
himself down to steer the ball into the bottom corner for the equaliser.
The return to stalemate ensured a grandstand finale in which we put
increasing pressure on the Black Cats and their goal. Taylor-Crossdale
turned provider to slide in Lamptey but the wing-back's strike thumped
back off the post before Jacob Young marshalled the front post
impressively to clear.
Mark Atkinson's side had only fleeting sights at goal for the remainder of
the 90 minutes, though Ziger was required to intervene with a crucial
punch to safety as Greenwood's corner threatened to cause problems. Down
the other end, Brand had introduced Tino Anjorin and Charlie Brown, with a
big chance falling for the latter in the final minute, though our top
scorer in this inaugural competition could not add to his three goals as
he volleyed high over the crossbar.
The injury to Patterson ensured a lengthy period of stoppage time would be
played and Woud make two crucial saves to first deny Anjorin at the near
post and then keep out Brown's effort with a brilliant reaction save down
low. There was still time for Lamptey to hit the woodwork again before
extra-time was indicated, the 17-year-old unlucky from the right after
McEachran had picked him out with a clever clipped pass.
Sunderland found it difficult to stem the tide of Chelsea attacks flowing
through their half even after the additional 30 minutes had begun.
McEachran shot straight at the keeper before he, Brown and Anjorin
combined to tee up Lamptey, who blasted inches over the goal frame from a
narrowing angle. Woud then sprung off his line to make another excellent
stop to deny Brown before the tie's third goal finally came with 104
minutes on the clock.
It was a goal deserving of victory, crafted by the eagerness of McEachran
to steal possession from Harrison Devine, the vision of Gallagher to shift
the ball left to Castillo when many others would have taken aim at goal,
and the calmness of the Dutchman to fire across the subtitute keeper and
into the far corner.
It seemed like the Blues would use their maturity and experience to see
out the final quarter of an hour as they kept possession and slowed the
game right down. Panzo made a good block in the box to keep out Young's
effort but it wasn't until the 123rd minute that the hosts fashioned their
wonderful opportunity to take the quarter-final to a penalty shootout.
Advances were made down the left once more and Ziger this time was ruled
to have fouled the attacker in red-and-white. Greenwood had the chance to
draw the game level again but his second effort from 12 yards was far more
manageable for Ziger and the keeper dropped to his left to make the save.
Greenwood kept the ball close to the keeper and Ziger dropped low to make
a match-winning save.
It was a fittingly pulsating conclusion to a dramatic cup quarter-final
and ensured our youngsters would progress to join Tottenham, Everton and
Arsenal in the last four. Details on our semi-final opposition will be
announced once the draw is made.
