Youth Cup report: Chelsea 7 West Brom 0
Wed 17 Jan 2018
The quest for a record-equalling fifth consecutive FA Youth Cup continued
in style for our Under-18s as they fired seven past West Brom without
reply at Aldershot.
Both Daishawn Redan and Callum Hudson-Odoi bagged braces, with the latter
also adding three further assists as Jody Morris's side comfortably
advanced into the fifth round. Marc Guehi's header had opened the scoring
with just 10 minutes on the clock and it was 3-0 by half-time, though the
Baggies did rattle the woodwork with the deficit at one.
An inspired restart helped the hosts move into a six-goal lead by the hour
mark, with Under-16 Tino Anjorin taking us to the half-dozen with his
second goal in the competition this term, and Martell Taylor-Crossdale
came off the bench to round off the scoring in stoppage time. The Blues
were brilliant and the Baggies well beaten as the holders continue to set
the standard.
There were four changes from our third round victory against Scunthorpe
United last month, with Ethan Ampadu making his fifth appearance for the
senior side in the FA Cup against Norwich City, while Reece James was
absent through injury. Morris did tinker with the shape as he utilised a
4-2-3-1 system and a back four of Tariq Lamptey, Jon Panzo, Juan Castillo
and Guehi were selected to protect keeper Jamie Cumming's goal.
Conor Gallagher, George McEachran and Tariq Uwakwe retained their midfield
berths, with the latter more advanced to the right alongside schoolboy
Tino Anjorin in the 'number 10' position and Hudson-Odoi operating from
the left. Redan led the line up front.
The contest was billed to be a more sterner challenge for the holders,
with Morris warning ahead of the game that West Brom were possibly the
toughest opponent we had faced in the early Youth Cup rounds for a number
of years. Boosted with a number of Under-23 regulars, the Baggies were
aiming to keep the shocks coming following third round exits for
Manchester United, Everton and Manchester City.
A frenetic start saw both sides open proceedings with energy and
enthusiasm, particularly in the midfield battleground. Lamptey fashioned
the first opportunity of the evening after advancing down the right and
delivering an inviting cross for Redan, though our Dutch striker could not
test Adam Przybek as he stretched behind to volley.
It took eight minutes for Morris's men to break the deadlock against
Scunthorpe and the wait for a goal in this tie was only marginally longer
as a set-piece proved Albion's early undoing. Hudson-Odoi swung in a deep
corner from the left and Guehi rose highest at the back post, powering his
header into the far corner despite the last-ditch efforts of Nick
Clayton-Phillips in trying to clear off the line.
An early cushion set the scene for the hosts to assert their authority and
carve out chances. Castillo's low strike from the edge of the box would
have troubled Przybek had the effort not been unintentionally blocked by
Anjorin, while Guehi repeated his set-piece trick to spin into space again
after 15 minutes, though this header was straight at Albion's Welsh
stopper.
Hudson-Odoi had proved a menace in his last match action, our weekend 5-0
victory at Sunderland in Premier League 2 in which he netted a hat-trick,
and he continued his eye-catching form in this contest. The 17-year-old
almost scored an audacious goal from distance after striking at the
unguarded goal from 35 yards out with Przybek chasing a loose ball on the
left, though the goalkeeper recovered just in time to make a flying save.
The visiting keeper was proving to be one of the busiest on the field and
he made another impressive intervention midway through the first period to
keep the deficit at one, tipping Hudson-Odoi's shot over after the forward
had aimed a stinging drive towards the top corner. Redan then missed the
target after Hudson-Odoi had turned provider from the left byline, though
it was not all one-way traffic as West Brom showed with two decent chances
around the half-hour mark.
Their best effort came through Rekeem Harper, who skipped away from two
tackles before firing against the angle of post and crossbar from the
right. Skipper Nathan Ferguson then headed off-target before
Clayton-Phillips forced Cumming into a smart stop at his near post.
Our unrivalled recent Youth Cup record makes the importance of converting
such opportunities so vital and the visitors were left to rue what might
have been as two goals in three minutes dented their ambitions.
Hudson-Odoi doubled our advantage with 32 minutes on the clock with
another goal of individual magic, driving infield from the left wing and
riding challenges before unleashing a precise low shot into the bottom far
corner.
The England Under-17 World Cup winner then claimed a second assist as he
combined neatly with Redan after the striker had accelerated into space
down the left. It was a disguised pass from the former that created the
sight at goal and Redan provided an accomplished finish with the outside
of his right boot to beat the onrushing keeper.
It could have been worse for the Baggies before the break as Uwakwe was
thwarted, the midfielder's near-post strike kept out by an expert reaction
stop from Przybek. Callum Morton then went close to reducing the arrears
as he fired across goal but narrowly steered his shot beyond the far post.
Three goals in 45 minutes was a terrific return for our youngsters but
their emergence for the second half brought even more impressive returns
as another three were scored in the opening quarter of an hour.
Hudson-Odoi signalled a warning with a strike just a whisker wide before
Lamptey stepped up to take on a starring role on the opposite flank. The
full-back moved into space and rolled a teasing low ball into the box for
Redan to turn in from close range.
There was to be no let-up from the blistering Blues, whose free-flowing
performance and clinical edge in front of goal was sending a signal of
intent to those pretenders to their crown. Hudson-Odoi made it eight goals
in his last five appearances seven minutes into the second period,
exchanging a short corner with Uwakwe before placing a perfect finish into
the far corner despite the narrowing angle.
This was a team made in Chelsea, with nine of the starters registered at
our Academy since the Under-9 age group, the earliest a young player can
sign. After netting in the last round, schoolboy midfielder Anjorin made
it two in two on the hour mark. Hudson-Odoi provided the delivery with a
left-sided free-kick and the 16-year-old stole in to head beyond Przybek.
Following a frenzied hour of goalscoring and penalty-box action, the final
30 minutes were far less eventful by comparison. Gallagher sliced a shot
wide and Przybek saved from Hudson-Odoi then Castillo's curler as our
determined defence of the trophy remained on course.
As the fourth official signalled five additional minutes, it allowed just
about enough time for substitute Taylor-Crossdale to get in on the
goalscoring act, the striker volleying in from Castillo's centre.
The 7-0 final scoreline was our biggest margin of victory in the
competition for 20 years and our first seven-goal haul since a 7-1 win
against Tottenham in the semi-final last campaign. It will be Spurs next
for Morris's men in the fifth round as we travel away for the first time
this term.

Youth Cup reaction: Scintillating but stable
Thu 18 Jan 2018
It was a combination of composure, clinical finishing and intelligence out
of possession that helped our Under-18s beat the Baggies and emphatically
advance into the FA Youth Cup fifth round.
Aldershot played host as both Callum Hudson-Odoi and Daishawn Redan bagged
braces in between headers from Marc Guehi and Tino Anjorin, while Martell
Taylor-Crossdale came off the bench to complete the scoring in stoppage
time as West Brom were beaten 7-0. It was our biggest victory in the
competition for 20 years and manager Jody Morris had words of praise for
how his side displayed quality throughout the pitch.
'I was particularly pleased with how we nullified their attacking threat
because West Brom are a dangerous team going forward,' Morris told the
official Chelsea website after the game. 'A lot of the video we watched
beforehand showed them playing some really good football so a huge amount
of credit should go to George McEachran and Conor Gallagher for plugging
gaps, screening their front players and winning second balls.
'We wanted to be more stable in possession and move them about with our
passing to get defenders isolated in one-on-one areas and that worked
really well. There was a good combination of some excellent attacking play
with stability off the ball and taking up good counter-pressing positions
so whenever we lost possession we could recover quickly and that was a
really pleasing element for us.'
The Blues were 3-0 up by half-time and added a further three goals in the
opening 15 minutes of the second period during a blistering attacking
display.
'We were really good going forward and showed lovely bits of link-up play
down both wings, with Juan Castillo and Callum down the left and Tariq
Lamptey with Tariq Uwakwe down the right,' continued Morris.
'The fact we had five different scorers was testament to the type of
attacking football we were playing because we looked a threat from
set-pieces, on the counter-attack and in isolated areas with individual
brilliance. The way we moved the ball about was fantastic and Daishawn's
second goal was brilliantly worked so it was no surprise the amount of
players that got on the scoresheet with the way we played.'
Hudson-Odoi was involved in five goals last night following a hat-trick
for our development squad at the weekend as he continued his impressive
recent individual form. Antonio Conte described the 17-year-old as 'a
very interesting player with good potential' earlier in the week and
Morris echoed that sentiment, while also vowing to eke out the maximum
from his teenage forward.
'Callum has the ability to play at any level he wants but he's still got
things to learn,' he noted. 'He needs to develop more of a cut-throat
mentality so when he realises he's got the better of the full-back, which
will happen a lot because he's a very gifted player going forward, he is
ruthless. I will get on his case because when you have a player of his
natural talent, it would be silly not to try to squeeze the most out of
him.'
The holders and eight-time winners will be one of just four Premier League
sides competing in the last-16 following a campaign of early shocks and
knockouts. They will travel to Tottenham in round five for a repeat of
last term's semi-final, in which Morris's men triumphed 9-2 on aggregate,
though the manager believes the dynamics will be very different in a
one-legged tie away from home.
'It will be a massive challenge for us. Whenever we've played Spurs before
in this competition in recent years it's been over two legs so to go away
from home in a one-off tie to play against a really good team will be
tough. At the same time, they will know how difficult we are to beat and
if we perform like we did against West Brom, I'll be quite confident.'
