Under-18s report: Chelsea 2 Newcastle 1
Sat 2 Dec 2017
Our youngsters secured their place in the Under-18 Premier League Cup
last-eight with a victory that was more comfortable than the final
scoreline suggested.
Charlie Brown moved on to 12 goals for the season with a brace, netting
smart finishes in both halves to put Jody Morris's side 2-0 up, before
Newcastle made it a nervy finale with a goal five minutes from time.
However, the Blues were able to hold on for the win they required to
finish top of Group B and advance to the quarter-finals.
It had been a week since the last outing for our youngsters, a 7-0
thumping of West Ham in the league, and Morris made three changes for the
visit of the Magpies. Conor Gallagher returned to skipper the side in
midfield, while Brown led the line up front and Billy Gilmour came in to
support the attack.
The hosts needed three points to secure their place in the quarter-finals
of the inaugural Under-18 cup competition following a win and a draw in
their previous two outings. Newcastle arrived at Cobham rooted to the
bottom of the northern league and the early momentum predictably was with
Morris's men as Brown forced a well-held save from Dan Langley with a
curling effort after five minutes.
Tariq Uwakwe's opportunity moments later proved to be our best of the
opening half hour as Gallagher robbed possession high up the field and
threaded a pass forward to find the midfielder advancing down the left
channel. Falling on his favoured left side, it was a presentable sight at
goal but the 18-year-old steered his shot wide of the far post.
Langley was almost caught out by Tariq Lamptey's cross from the right but
managed to readjust his feet quickly and parry the ball over the bar as
Morris's men were left frustrated by their inability to break through a
resilient rearguard.
Precision in the pass plus patience were required. Brown thought he had
broken the deadlock at the end of a quality Chelsea move, Jon Panzo
spraying a diagonal pass out to the right and Lamptey delivering a cross
into the box but Brown's acrobatic effort flew just off-target.
The Blues then had two strong penalty appeals in quick succession as the
interval approached. Lamptey picked up Juan Castillo's dinked delivery to
the back post but first saw his strike blocked and then the referee award
only a corner following a Newcastle challenge. The resulting set-piece was
swung in and Marcel Lavinier felt certain he had been held as he looked to
reach the ball in the air but again the officials turned away our appeals.
An advantage was established three minutes before half-time as Brown
notched his 11th goal of the season with a typically smart finish from
inside the 18-yard box. With the visitors dropping deeper and deeper,
Gilmour retrieved possession on the edge of the area and fired a
half-volley towards goal. The Scot's strike lacked power but fell kindly
for Brown, who took it on his chest and spun towards goal before slotting
beyond the keeper for the opener.
Newcastle might have had an instant equaliser before the break as they
launched a rare forward foray and the ball ricocheted around our box,
eventually falling invitingly for Kurtis Russell, though the wideman's
strike was expertly turned behind by Karlo Ziger. Our Croatian keeper then
clawed away the following corner as we took a slender lead into the second
half.
Uwakwe continued to act as the creative spark for much of our attacking
play and went close to making it 2-0 six minutes after the restart with a
low drive from 25 yards that thumped the base of the post. The
midfielder's cross was then palmed clear by Langley with Brown lurking
before the unchallenged Lavinier met Gilmour's corner but failed to place
his header on target.
The attacking intentions from the visitors were minimal and the Blues
continued to carve out opportunities to extend the lead and secure the
group points. Brown fired at goal and Langley spilled the ball into the
path of Gallagher but our captain could not squeeze the rebound underneath
the sprawling Magpies stopper.
Morris introduced additional attacking options from the bench in the shape
of Daishawn Redan and George McEachran, the latter firing over and then
forcing an impressive reaction stop from Langley having been teed up by
Brown.
Our second goal finally arrived with 11 minutes remaining and it was Brown
celebrating his dozen for the campaign to date. Lamptey turned provider
with some good work down the right and a teasing low cross sent into the
six-yard box. The striker's movement was clever as he raced in front of
his marker and guided his finish into the back of the net.
There was a chance for Brown to complete a second Cobham hat-trick on
successive weekends but he could not stretch high enough to meet
Castillo's delivery and the visitors ensured a competitive final few
minutes as they halved the deficit through Thomas Cole, the midfielder
beating Ziger with a well-struck volley.
Heading out of the competition, Newcastle finally threw caution to the
wind and subsequently left spaces in behind as they pushed for a leveller.
Lamptey's cross was close to being diverted into the bottom corner at the
end of a blistering Blues break but it was Chelsea hearts in mouths in
added time as Russell's strike flicked off Wakely's head and wrong-footed
Ziger – fortunately for the hosts, the ball looped up and dropped on to
the roof of the net.
With seven points from a possible nine, the Under-18s move confidently
into the knockout stages of this new competition and also extend their
unbeaten home run in all competitions to 47 matches. If they can overcome
Scunthorpe United in the FA Youth Cup later this month, that record will
stretch beyond a remarkable 1000 days.

Under-18s reaction: Pleased to progress
Mon 4 Dec 2017
A fourth consecutive win in all competitions for our youth team saw them
collect another three group points and secure a quarter-final spot in the
inaugural Under-18 Premier League Cup.
A well-taken brace from Charlie Brown, his fifth and sixth goals in this
winning sequence, handed the advantage to Jody Morris's side against
Newcastle United at Cobham on Saturday morning. However, the visitors
reduced the deficit with six minutes remaining and were encouraged to push
forward for an equaliser in the final moments of the contest.
Morris was left largely pleased with his side's display but felt their
dominance for long periods should have been utilised better, reducing the
risk of a Newcastle comeback late on.
'We played well in spells and were in control for probably 80 per cent of
the game but we didn't make the most of that control,' the Under-18s
manager told the official Chelsea website after the game. 'We were a bit
safe in our passing, too content with going side to side and keeping the
ball rather than looking to hurt Newcastle a bit more.
'It's disappointing to concede a goal because they started to pose a
threat towards the end but I was then pleased with some of our last-ditch
defending from people like Marcel Lavinier. All in all, it's not a bad
performance – we've topped the group and are still undefeated.'

The cup competition has been introduced to the Under-18s programme this
term following the decision to remove the league merit round, thereby
acting as one of the few opportunities our youngsters have to pit their
wits against sides from outside the southern region.
'I reminded the players before the game of some of the northern teams that
have come to Cobham in the last few years and done well against us,'
continued Morris. 'The likes of Everton, Middlesbrough and Manchester
United have given us a test, plus one of our toughest games this season so
far was Blackburn away. It's not so much the fact they're northern teams
but more we don't know as much about them and maybe the lads don't know as
many of their players.'
The manager also had words of encouragement for scorer Brown, who reached
a dozen goals for the season with his double against the Magpies.
'Charlie started the season doing a lot better in his all-round game,
looking a threat when going in behind and really helping the team in
winning the ball back. He'll always get chances because of the type of
player he is but his challenge is to take fewer chances to score. Even
though he scored a hat-trick last week, his overall game was much better
this week and his goals were two well-taken finishes.
'The team performance was quite pleasing overall. It was only really the
last 10-15 minutes that we lost our shape and discipline, when there were
gaps for us to exploit and we needed to do better. The personnel coming on
needed to get into the swing of things a bit quicker but overall we have
to be happy to win the group and make the next round.'
The Blues join Everton, Norwich City, Liverpool, Fulham, Arsenal,
Tottenham and Sunderland in the last eight. Details on our quarter-final
tie will be confirmed shortly.
