PL2 report: Chelsea 1 Swansea City 3
Fri 13 Oct 2017
Our development squad suffered a third league defeat of the season with
Kylian Hazard netting a second-half consolation for Joe Edwards' side.
The damage was done before the break at Aldershot. Swansea striker Oli
McBurnie opened the scoring midway through the half with a back-post
header, and within 14 minutes he had completed his hat-trick with a pair
of clinical finishes.
The Blues had chances to get back in it after the interval but found the
visitors' keeper Erwin Mulder in good form, until Hazard scored from close
range immediately after coming on for his debut.
It provided a moment of positivity on an otherwise frustrating night for
the young Blues. Next up for them is another home PL2 fixture against West
Ham a week on Sunday.
Joe Edwards made a number of changes to the side that started the
development squad's last game, at Leicester a fortnight ago. Jamie Cumming
came in between the posts, and in front of him Joseph Colley returned in
defence. Harvey St Clair replaced Isaac Christie-Davies and trialist
Victor Adeboyejo led the line with Miro Muheim dropping to the bench.
The opening quarter-of-an-hour passed more or less without incident as
both sides enjoyed good spells of possession without threatening in the
final third. The only moment of concern for the Blues came when Dujon
Sterling went down in some pain off the ball and required treatment.
Happily, he was okay to continue.
On 20 minutes, Adeboyejo headed Reece James's fierce right-wing cross
narrowly over with the first effort on goal of the evening. Trevoh
Chalobah had started the move with a fine crossfield ball from deep.
But five minutes later it was the visitors took the lead. Jordan Garrick
got played into space down the right and he delivered an excellent cross
to the far post which was met powerfully by McBurnie who guided his header
past Cumming.
The Scottish striker nearly doubled his and Swansea's tally immediately
but volleyed a presentable chance over. He didn't have to wait long for
goal number two, however, as he burst onto a pass on the edge of the box
and slotted past the helpless Cumming.
McBurnie could have completed his hat-trick earlier but half-volleyed a
difficult chance over. And then on 36 minutes, Chalobah got a crucial
block in to divert Daniel James's goalbound effort wide after the winger
had raced down the left.
The Swans were well on top now and didn't have to wait long for a third.
George Byers broke at speed down the middle and picked out McBurnie in a
bit of space to his left. The confidence of the striker was plain to see
as he curled a sumptuous, first-time strike across Cumming into the top
right-hand corner.
It epitomised a half-hour period the visitors had dominated leading to the
break. Play restarted with a change of shape and personnel made by Joe
Edwards. Cole Dasilva replaced St Clair, and Chalobah advanced into
midfield with Maddox moving closer to Adeboyejo.
The striker should have reduced the deficit five minutes into the half but
blasted over when McCormick's cross was diverted into his path by the
sliding Cian Harries.
Our no.10 then drew a fine low stop from the experienced Erwin Mulder
after a ricochet fell his way. Swansea countered through Dan James and he
nearly finished the move he started, but Grant got a crucial clearance in
to cut out McBurnie's dangerous cross.
Midway through the half, Reece James tried his luck from 20 yards after
intercepting a pass, and it required a fine diving stop from Mulder to
palm the right-back's effort wide.
With a quarter-of-an-hour to go Hazard was brought on for his first
development squad appearance since joining, and barely 60 seconds later he
had found the net. Maddox crossed deep to Chalobah, who was up for a
corner, and his header was palmed into Hazard's path by Mulder. The
Belgian couldn't miss and marked his first touch in a Chelsea shirt with
his first goal.
Sterling might have set up an anxious finale with a few minutes to go, but
Mulder superbly kept out his close-range header from a free-kick Hazard
had won. It would prove the final meaningful action of the night.

PL2 reaction: Punishment in both boxes
Sat 14 Oct 2017
Joe Edwards pinpointed problems at either end of the pitch as he reflected
on the development squad's defeat to Swansea City last night.
Trailing by three at the break, the Blues had plenty of chances after it
but could only take one, through sub Kylian Hazard. That meant Oli
McBurnie's fine first-half treble was the difference between the sides at
Aldershot, and Edwards explained why he felt it was a frustrating
performance.
'We do a lot of good work in the middle of the pitch, play some decent
football and control the game, but part of the game is to defend your goal
properly and be clinical at the other end,' he noted. 'That is just what
we are lacking at the moment.
'We started quite comfortably and it looked like a decent, enthusiastic
return from the international break, but all of a sudden, in the space of
about 15 minutes, we've let in two particularly soft goals against a
number nine who was a real threat. He was clinical, and we got punished.
'Like a few times already this season, we were chasing the game and it was
difficult. In the second half we changed the system to make ourselves a
little bit more solid, not necessarily to go and chase the game like we
did against Man United. We just tried to steady things up. It worked and
we then actually created a few big chances ourselves. Their goalkeeper
made a couple of outstanding saves but if we finished like their number
nine did, it could have been a different game.
'It wasn't, and we have got to do better in both penalty areas otherwise
we are not going to get any results.'
Edwards said he was pleased with his players' response after the break
which displayed their fighting mentality. A couple of very good chances
passed before sub Hazard, Eden's brother who joined in the summer, got one
back.
'It was good to see Kylian. It would have been nice to see him in better
circumstances where he wasn't coming on when the game was pretty much dead
and buried. He got his finish and hopefully he can keep working hard and
we can see more of him in the future.'
Edwards' next job is to lead our Under-19s against Roma in the UEFA Youth
League on Wednesday at Cobham, many of whom featured last night and will
do so again when we meet West Ham in the PL on Sunday 22 October.
'It's strange because the Under-19 team and the Under-23 team are really
similar, so although in terms of this league the run of form and results
don't look great, most of these players' last game was an away game in
Atletico Madrid which was a good performance and a really good result.
'We have got the same again where although we want to put things right
with the 23s against West Ham, we have got a game against Roma before
that. It's a real busy spell coming up for us, a lot of big games and we
want to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible.'
