With the tie finishing 1-1 on aggregate, Robben stepped up to take Chelsea's first penalty in the shoot-out but saw his shot saved by Jose Reina. Liverpool went on to book their place in the final but Mourinho has refused to criticise Robben, who made his comeback from a lengthy injury lay-off as an extra-time substitute. Mourinho praised: "Robben was a brave boy. He wanted very much to come and help because he knows the team is in a difficult moment with so many injuries. "He was not absolutely ready but he was saying `I want to help'. I played him to try, with his speed and sharpness, to bring something to the game in extra-time. "We tried to score the winning goal and after that it went to penalties. "He is a good penalty taker. He was confident to take it and again he was brave to have the responsibility and go. He missed - that's life." Andrei Shevchenko, meanwhile, was disappointed that the tie had to be settled by penalties. The Ukrainian travelled to Anfield on his own after his omission from the squad had led to reports of a rift with Mourinho. "It was a great opportunity and I am really sad - the team played very well with good heart. But penalties are a lottery," said Shevchenko, who missed out through injury. "Both teams had chances to win the game during the 120 minutes. "The decision was made on Sunday that I couldn't play after the doctor spoke with the manager and with the club. "It has been a very difficult time for me with the injuries. It just happened to me before this very important game and I really wanted to be available to play in it. But my injury didn't allow that.
