Club doctor Bryan English says: “He jammed something in the warm-up and it was far too near kick-off to be able to sort it out. He went into spasm and we couldn't relieve it. “But he's in for treatment today and is far better already. He'll be seeing the club chiropractor later and we'll take it from there.” Cudicini's withdrawal in the warm-up allowed Lenny Pidgeley to make his first Chelsea start and play his first full 90 minutes. After the game manager Jose Mourinho said: “Maybe next season we will travel always with three goalkeepers, because when one has a problem in the warm-up you have always a goalkeeper on the bench. The injury is not serious but will leave a scar. However, that will be minimal. “It was nice and straight over the forehead,” he said. “It's not a problem and he'll be okay. “But I would really like to thank the Newcastle medical team because the wound went all the way down to his skull and his eye-lid, and I really needed the help of a plastic surgeon. As it happens, the crowd surgeon at Newcastle is a plastic surgeon, and the two of us sewed him back together. “Really, I needed three or four hands for this, and that is what he helped give me, but also his expertise at dealing with this kind of thing everyday was important in knowing where to tie things up and make the little differences.
