The Chelsea captain currently stands on 271 games played, still a long way off Ron Harris' record of 795 appearances. Another who has skippered the club, 'Chopper' Harris played for 19 years but with Terry set to hit the 50 games in a season mark for the third year running this weekend, the 25 year-old believes the target is within reach. “I would love to get there,” he told Chelsea TV. “Everyone knows I want to stay at Chelsea for the rest of my career and fingers-crossed, if I stay fit and away from injuries I’ll be on target.” While it is more often team-mate Frank Lampard who gains plaudits for his durability, Terry, who has been quoted as wishing to emulate Milan's Paolo Maldini as a legendary one-club man, has played more Chelsea games than anyone this season. “I am delighted to have stayed fit for three seasons and to have played that many games,” he says. “I missed out on the last two games of last season because of a foot operation but hopefully I can continue all the way this season. “I had little niggles when I was younger. Nothing too serious, two or three weeks and then I was back in training. For Chelsea to retain the Premiership trophy this weekend, the team need only to do what it has done for the past two seasons — avoid defeat at home in the league. “When the manager came in, he said he wanted to make Stamford Bridge a fortress, make it difficult for teams to come here and get points,” recalled John Terry just before final training ahead of the Man United game. “And we have certainly done that! “The fans will be massively important. They have played a part for the last couple of years and our home record speaks for itself. The home fans have been great, away from home as well. It is going to be a great atmosphere and we want to get things wrapped up for the fans tomorrow. “To retain it would be good in itself but it will be great to win it at home. To do it against Man United makes it extra special.” Terry revealed that he had long expected a tighter race this season than last. If Chelsea do win the league this Saturday, it will have taken one more game to do so. At the start of the season the skipper had a feeling this fixture could turn out to be a very big match. “No disrespect to anyone but I did see Man United as our main rivals this year. When they went through a sticky patch early on, for them to look at the table must have been quite disheartening, especially when they were winning but we were winning also and they couldn't catch us. “But they have been on a great run and have put us under quite a bit of pressure coming into the final stages.” That pressure eased when Man United dropped two point at home to Sunderland on Good Friday, followed by two consecutive Chelsea victories. Since then there has been the immensely-disappointing FA Cup semi-final defeat by Liverpool at Old Trafford — but that is out of the system. “I don't think anybody spoke all the way home from Manchester to London,” reports Terry. “I think that said it all, but fair play to the manager, we have started again and we have had a really good week of training.
