Crystal Palace are bottom of the Academy Group, but like Portsmouth with the first team were dogged and difficult to beat. Jimmy Smith gave Chelsea the lead midway through the first-half with a magnificent 25 yards free-kick. Saarelma's moment came ten minutes later when full-back Sam Hutchinson took a quick free-kick and found him free in the area to turn and beat the keeper at the near post. It was just the third start of the season for the Finnish 17 year old. Youth team manager Brendan Rodgers said: “This was another good performance in difficult conditions, it was very windy, to continue our good run. We had chances to score more goals. Crystal Palace were better than their League position showed, in particular in the first-half. But once we got the goals our good team work controlled the game.” There were debuts for Tom Taiwo and Michael Woods.
