Michael Essien came third in the voting. Drogba's nine goals in sending Ivory Coast to the World Cup for the first time plus his double trophy winning achievements with Chelsea last year gathered much support amongst the national coaches of Africa. A narrow margin of just two votes decided the winner. The Chelsea striker polled 106 to his Barcelona counterpart's 108. Essien collected 50 votes. It is a third consecutive win for Eto'o making him the first player to win the Confederation of African Football's honour that many times. Jon Obi Mikel, the 18 year-old Nigerian midfielder embroiled in a transfer dispute between Chelsea and Man United was named Young African Player of the Year. Some consolation for Drogba is his name appearing in both Africa's Best XI for 2005 and the Team of the Tournament from the recent African Cup of Nations. Meanwhile, Essien, who missed the tournament through injury is back in the Ghana squad to face Mexico in a friendly next month.
