In the final reserve match of 2005, Fulham defeated Mick McGiven's side by a single goal and after they had taken the lead with only 16 minutes gone of the first game of 2006, a repeat scoreline looked very much on the cards. But as the second period progressed, Chelsea found belief on a chilly evening. They pressed, began to make chances and from two corners, Phil Younghusband and Jimmy Smith rescued the evening. Chelsea in fact made a bright start to the game, putting together a few flowing attacks, balanced up by an early moment of indecision between Chelsea keeper and defender as Michael Mancienne placed the ball beyond Yves Ma Kalambay. Adrian Pettigrew cleared the danger. However when Chelsea went behind with just over a quarter-of-an-hour gone, the performance went into steep decline. Fulham's goal was a direct free-kick. Despite his long reach, Ma Kalambay was beaten by a well-struck shot into the top corner from a wide position. The scorer was Adam Green; Mancienne had conceded the kick. The decision looked a little harsh. The Chelsea defender's evening worsened just a minute later when he was booked for a late tackle after a loose pass by Jonas Elmer. Just before the break, Chelsea forced opposing keeper Batista off his line when he came for a Joe Tillen free-kick which was knocked out of his reach and back by Danny Hollands. Filipe Morais couldn't keep a shot down. In truth, Chelsea had failed to muster a single worthy effort on goal by the break. The second-half began with two bookings for late challenges, one for each side. Fulham's Otley and Chelsea's Pettigrew were cautioned. Between the incidents, Timlin drove a shot wide for the home side. Hollands climbed well but was wide with a header from a testing Morais cross as Chelsea at last showed they could threaten. On 65 minutes Green was booked for bringing down Dean Smith after the Chelsea right-back had knocked the ball past him. From Tillen's free-kick, it took a scrambled block at the foot of the post by the keeper to repel Mancienne's header first and then Jimmy Smith's follow-up. Chelsea were improving all the time and keeping the pressure on. Smith was not too far away from applying the important header in front of goal when substitute Scott Sinclair sent over a cross on the run from the left. Hollands had a shot deflected wide a minute later and with the corner that followed, Chelsea equalised. Morias' centre was a deep one. Mancienne nodded down, Pettigrew couldn't quite prod the ball home but substitute Phil Younghusband could. The goal had been on the cards. There were ten minutes left to find a winner. It came seven minutes later from the same source. Morais left-side corner dropped into a sea of bodies on the edge of the six-yard box, Batista didn't come to collect and Jimmy Smith gleefully headed home. Deep into stoppage time it took a good Ma Kalambay save from Timlin after an Anthony Grant mistake, and then two clearances from a well-positioned Mancienne to preserve the comeback win.
