The fifth programme of the talent series Football Icon is being broadcast Sky One at 7pm on Sunday. Twelve boys were selected to join Chelsea FC’s youth academy after a nationwide search involving thousands of young hopefuls, and a selection weekend at Chelsea’s training ground in Cobham. Last week, Londoner Alan Morais and Stockport lad Carl Richardson, whose progress had been hampered by injury, were both released by academy head Neil Bath. Their departure has definitely shaken up the rest of the group, who realise that the honeymoon is very much over. This week — the boys’third in the academy — Neil Bath has arranged a match with the existing academy scholars to see how good the remaining ten Icon boys really are. Immediately after the game, he tells the final ten that this week he could be drastically cutting their numbers. Only the best will be good enough from next week onwards as they will be joining Under 18s coach Brendan Rodgers and the youth academy proper. Also in the show, ex-Chelsea legend and Football Icon judge Ray Wilkins takes the ten lads on a tour of Stamford Bridge to give them a taste of the glory that could be theirs if they win that coveted contract.
