Coach Brendan Rodgers said afterwards: “I was actually happy that we played really well against a physically stronger Manchester City team. The best team lost. We dominated possession which forced them to put everyone behind the ball. “At this early stage of the season we struggled a wee bit on creativity, but that knowledge will grow during the season.” A couple of efforts went close in the first-half and a couple of chances were missed. Debutant substitute Lee Sawyer, the schoolboy who did so well in the Northern Ireland Milk Cup, hit the bar in the second-half. “While it was 0-0 there was always a chance for us,” Brendan said. But with 20 minutes to go the team threw a goal in defensively. “Then we were pushing to get the equaliser and they scored a second with two minutes to go. “Performance-wise we didn’t do a lot wrong. We just need to be more clinical or clever in the last third. We’ll play worse games and win this season.” Left-back Ryan Bertrand injured his hand in a fall and went to hospital for an x-ray. It is believed the injury will not be serious.
