The first 11 numbers are all filled. Last season’s vacant number one shirt has been taken by Petr Cech, Ricardo Carvalho is the natural replacement for Marcel Desailly at number six while the coveted number nine shirt goes to Mateja Kezman. Number five was also unused last season but this year will be worn by Alexei Smertin. Didier Drogba takes the 15 vacated by Mario Melchiot. Away from the new arrivals, all remaining in the squad from last season have retained the same number. Lenny Pidgeley is the one new addition from the junior ranks. Taking the 40 shirt, he is the third numbered goalkeeper.
