In 1996, John Paul II went further and : suggested evolution was “more than a hypothesis” and “effectively proven : fact”. : Yet more recently, Benedict XVI and his close advisors have apparently : endorsed the idea that intelligent design underpins evolution – the idea : that natural selection on its own is insufficient to explain the complexity : of the world. In 2005, his close associate Cardinal Schoenborn wrote an : article saying “evolution in the sense of common ancestry might be true, but : evolution in the neo-Darwinian sense – an unguided, unplanned process – is : not”. 長久以來天主教都保有「反對科學」的名聲，最為著名的就是伽利略被迫收回他「異端的」 日心說這件事。 不過教宗方濟各的觀點可說是延續自那位對演化論打開大門並直接歡迎大霹靂學說的教宗 庇護十二世的立場。接著在1996年教宗若望保祿二世更進一步的表示演化論「不只是個假 說」且是「一個受到有力證明的事實」。 而在近年教宗本篤十六世與他的親信顧問則十分明顯的贊同神導演化論的觀點－此一觀點 認為自然發展並不能解釋為何世界如此複雜。2005年時他一個親信史裘博恩樞機曾撰文表 示「關於演化自共同祖先的說法可能是真的，不過關於新達爾文主義所說的演化是毫無計 畫與章法的說法則否」 : Giovanni Bignami, a professor and president of Italy’s National Institute : for Astrophysics, told the Italian news agency Adnkronos: “The pope’s : statement is significant. We are the direct descendents from the Big Bang : that created the universe.
