Shortstop Brendan Ryan on Tuesday became the latest Cardinals player to bring medical intrigue to the opening of spring training when he required arthroscopic surgery to address chronic right wrist pain. Ryan, the team's projected opening day shortstop, had the procedure performed by Los Angeles specialist Dr. Steven Shin. The club anticipates Ryan will be limited the first four weeks of spring training but did not preclude his availability for opening day. General manager John Mozeliak described the development as disappointing, adding that he did not learn of Ryan's persistent pain until last Thursday. "I think everyone recognizes that this is not the best of timing," Mozeliak said. "But our understanding is that Brendan should be able to participate in spring training and be available for the start of the season." The Cardinals admitted surprise at the rapid turn of events involving Ryan, which led him to consult with Shin on Friday. "In a perfect world, Brendan would have brought this to our attention sooner," Mozeliak said. "I can understand how people feel their body will heal after rest. But he should have let our medical staff know." Since 2002, the Cardinals have had at least five injuries or surgeries before or during the first week of spring training. Starting pitchers Darryl Kile and Woody Williams, center fielder Jim Edmonds and third baseman Troy Glaus arrived with physical complications. Outfielder J.D. Drew injured himself by stepping on a golf ball in the outfield one February. Rick Ankiel's conversion to position player from pitcher encountered a setback in 2006 when he suffered a severely strained patella tendon during a camp coaches' game. Ryan on Wednesday described the sensation in his wrist as "a knifing feeling." Ryan and second baseman Skip Schumaker spent much of the winter taking instruction from first-year Cardinals hitting coach Mark McGwire near their southern California homes. Ryan did not indicate a problem with his wrist during last month's appearance at Cardinals Care Winter Warm-Up, but grew concerned when the problem worsened after he returned to California. McGwire eventually insisted Ryan get the wrist re-evaluated. "It was like after the first couple swings I'd have to take the knife out of my wrist," Ryan said Wednesday. "The first 20-25 swings was pretty bad. It hurt. But then things started to ease up a little and I could continue. ... It just got worse and worse the last couple of weeks, so this wasn't even something we could discuss until recently." Ryan appeared in 129 games last season while taking cortisone injections in the wrist. He occasionally complained about discomfort, but when he landed on the disabled list April 30 it was for a hamstring strain rather than a hand issue. Ryan had suffered a left wrist injury during camp in 2006 and was limited that season to 28 games at four minor-league stops. "I haven't been able to do open-handed push-ups for four or five years because of the stress," Ryan said. "It will be nice to have the peace of mind that it's OK again." Ryan was considered the league's top defensive shortstop last season. However, lack of name recognition and experience crimped his chances to capture a Gold Glove. Ryan also is developing on offense; he raised his .244 average in 80 games in 2008 to .292 with 55 runs and 14 stolen bases last season. With Ryan unavailable for at least the first portion of the Cardinals' Grapefruit League schedule, the club probably will turn to Tyler Greene and veteran Julio Lugo. Lugo is considered a better option at second base but made 18 starts at shortstop following his trade to the Cardinals on July 22. Greene made 20 starts at shortstop for the Cardinals but was left off the team's postseason roster. Mozeliak has downplayed organizational interest in free agent Felipe Lopez, considered a utility starter. "I'd like to stay the course and get to spring training before we really prioritize our needs," said Mozeliak, who has advocated giving exposure to internal options at third base and on the bench. "I don't know right now if (shortstop) is going to be our biggest need." Ryan is shut down for the next 7-10 days and is scheduled to resume throwing and swinging a bat in 3-6 weeks, according to Mozeliak, who remains confident Ryan can be ready for the team's April 5 opener in Cincinnati. "No one has indicated otherwise." Ryan's surgery comes about a year after Glaus required right shoulder surgery. Initially projected to be out for 12-14 weeks, Glaus instead required a lengthy rehab assignment. He played in only 14 regular-season games and his ability to play third base was compromised.
