The Cardinals have signed former Chicago Cubs lefthander Rich Hill to
headline a group of 17 non-roster invitees to spring training. Hill, who
struggled in 14 appearances (13 starts) for the Baltimore Orioles last
season, is best remembered locally for his four seasons with the Cubs, which
included an 11-8 record and 3.92 in 32 starts during their run to the 2007 NL
Central crown.
The Cardinals today announced Hill as one of eight non-roster pitchers
invited to camp. Pitchres and catchers are scheduled to report to Jupiter,
Fla., Feb. 17 with camp’s first workout scheduled for the following day.
The Cardinals also invited the organization’s pitcher of the year, Lance
Lynn; Evan MacLane; Pete Parise; Onell Perez, Fernando Salas, Eduardo Sanchez
and knuckleballer Charlie Zink.
Catchers Tony Cruz, Charlie Cutler, Steven Hill and Robert Stock will also
attend. The Cardinals made Stock their second-round pick in last year’s
amateur draft.
Infielders Daniel Descalso, Ruben Gotay, Pete Kozma and Donovan Solano will
also attend major-league camp on special invites. Kozma was the Cardinals’
first-round pick in the 2007 draft; Descalso earned selection as a Texas
League All-Star at Double-A Springfield before ending the year at Memphis.
Gotay was signed as a minor-league free agent and is given the best chance of
challenging for a bench spot.
Tyler Henley, another Texas League All-Star, is the only non-roster
outfielder invited to camp after producing a .303 average, 13 home runs and
63 RBI at Springfield.
With 38 players on the major-league roster, the Cardinals are now set to
bring 55 players into camp. General manager John Mozeliak has left open the
possibility of further additions to enhance the team’s outfield and bullpen
depth but has downplayed any movement before camp opens.
Hill, who turns 30 in March, suffered an abrupt loss of command in his final
season with the Cubs, capped by a April 23, 2008 start at Busch Stadium in
which he managed only two outs while walking four in a 27-pitch meltdown.
Manager Lou Piniella lifted Hill and called for his immediate option to
Triple-A Iowa. It became Hill’s final start with the Cubs.
Heavily reliant on his curveball, Hill showed promise in 2007, when he struck
out 183 in 195 innings while compiling a 2.90 strikeout-to-walk ratio and
allowing an average 1.195 baserunners per inning.
Hill was 3-3 with a 7.80 ERA last season, amassing 46 strikeouts against 40
walks in 57 2/3 innings. Hill was diagnosed with a displaced labrum tear last
July and required August surgery.
He joins a competition for the No. 5
starter role that also includes lefthander Jaime Garcia and reliever Kyle
McClellan and is expected to fully participate in spring training. The
Cardinals perceive Hill as a low-risk investment. Signed to a split contract,
Hill is due $575,000 should he remain with the major-league club all season.
“We feel he’s healthy,” Mozeliak said. “He feels that he’s stronger than
he ever was last year. It’s the best he’s felt since ‘07.”
